Greetings! 

 

Wow, it's cold today! I guess I'm not ready for winter yet...

Since muscles take a little longer to stretch when they are cold, I'm guessing that many of you are feeling that your body isn't quite ready for the cold weather either. One way to help is to make sure that you warm up for an extra couple of minutes

before beginning your run or hike or bike ride. This time of year it's more important than ever to listen to your body. If you feel any tension or stiffness that you normally don't experience at the start of your workout, simply stop and take another few minutes to stretch and warm up those cold muscles before going on! 

 

Today I have included an exercise that helps increase circulation and gets you warmed up fast. Try it - you'll like it!

Qi Gong 

If you have never tried Qi Gong, (pronounced chee gong), I highly recommend taking a class. Qi Gong is a form of Tai Chi and has been shown to reduce blood pressure, remove those pesky extra stress hormones from your body, and improve your mood. I use some Qi Gong exercises on a regular basis in my daily practice and here is one of my favorites! This one helps to balance our kidney energy and restore vitality. Who wouldn't like that?

 

~ Stand tall with your feet a little more than hip distance apart, and your spine long. Your arms are relaxed and dangling at your sides.

~ Begin by twisting at your waist and swinging your arms loosely so that they freely fly in one direction and then the other, letting your fists sort of slap your back and side on each swing. As you breathe deeply, bend your knees slightly and increase the speed and motion of your swings. You can sway back and forth as well to give you more momentum. Continue for at least one minute, all the while breathing deeply. You can slowly raise your arms so that your fists are hitting a different spot, and then slowly lower them back down. After your minute, slowly reduce the speed and the intensity of your arm swings until the arms gently come to a stop. Now close your eyes and feel the energy flowing through your body - pretty cool, huh?
