Summer seems to be rushing past us full speed ahead and too many of us are attempting to juggle catching up on work and end of summer recreational activities with more family bike rides, hikes, swimming, etc. This week I have seen four people with new back pain due to all this summer juggling - Yikes! Take care of your back and it will take care of you. It's easier than you may think. Some simple procedures, before and after activitys, are all you need to feel fine.

 

Enjoy my techniques for self-care during these hectic end of summer weeks, have some laughs, and have a healthy week - especially back health!

Simple Back Care For All Your Fun Summer Activites! 

It's mid August already and the kids have started fall sports in preparation for starting school in a couple of weeks - where did the time go?!

Well, while you are rushing to get all those summer biking, hiking and other adventures in before fall, please remember that you've neglected your back and it will not be happy that you are suddenly doing so much without stretching and strengthening.

Here's an easy routine for you:

  • Before your running, hiking or biking, step one foot up onto a bench or chair and place the other foot behind you as far as you can. Stretch into this lunge gently and breathe deeply for at least one minute, then repeat with the other leg.
  • When you return, do the above stretch again. Then lie on your back on the floor and hug one knee into your chest tightly for 30 seconds, then switch knees, then hug both in and rock slightly to loosen any tension.
  • At night before bed, lie on your back on the floor next to your couch and place your legs on the seat of the couch so that your thighs are perpendicular to the floor, butt is against the base of the couch and lower legs are relaxed on the seat of the couch. If the back of your neck is arched with chin pointing up toward the ceiling, place a folded towel or small pillow under your head. Close your eyes and relax here for five minutes. This is the only position in the world where every muscle in your back can relax completely, so enjoy!

You can repeat the last step anytime that you feel the need to relax tense muscles, take care of yourself!
