Greetings!

I have come to the conclusion that a lot of people are losing their hair these days - and it's not completely the fault of current economic conditions! Research that I've done recently provides some surprising reasons for hair loss, which I've included in today's main article. I'm sure you'll find it informative. I've also included a link to more information if you're one of the million+ in our over 40 generation whose hair is falling out!

I am one of the lucky ones with heredity on my side. My dad (photo below) had a full head of hair all of his life as did my mom and her mom. In fact all of my grandparents did. Currently none of my brothers are losing their hair while many of their friends have quickly receding hairlines...

Enjoy the humor, don't miss the recommendations, and have a healthy week!

Here's my dad dancing with my sister at her wedding.

Look at all that hair!

Hair, Hair, Everywhere Hair!

Remember during adolescence when your hormones were raging and you acquired hair on body parts that had previously not had hair? Well, now that our hormones are unbalanced again, it's not surprising that hair loss is one of the side effects.

What you may not know, however, is that it's the balance of hormones that may be causing your bald spot. We all, both men and women, need a balanced ratio of progesterone to estrogen for optimum health. Estrogen dominance happens when the level of estrogen in your body outweighs the level of progesterone beyond that normal ratio. Here's how it works. When you are estrogen dominant, this extra estrogen interferes with thyroid hormones,  mimicking the effects of hypothyroidism. Estrogen increases Thyroid Binding Globulin (TBG) in the blood, which slows thyroid activity. Hair loss is a common side effect.

It may also surprise you to hear that your diet could be part of the problem. It's DAIRY. Yes, put down that tasty bit of cheese! According to Dr. Neal Barnard, a leading cancer expert, dairy is for cows, not people. Ol' Doc Barnard tells us to think about the purpose of cows milk. Mama cows produce it to help baby cows go from 100 lbs to 800 lbs in 6 months. It contains dozens of hormones to facilitate that baby cow's rapid growth. Yikes! Dr. Barnard has years worth of clinical evidence to support his recommendations that we remove dairy from our diet for optimum health. OK, so I rarely recommend going whole hog on any changes that we make, because I know that's just too difficult for most of us to maintain. I do think it's a good idea to cut back on dairy consumption, so I've been replacing dairy in recipes with coconut milk lately and find it works very well. Try a few experiments yourself!

You will actually be addressing two issues when you cut back on dairy, as fat cells can also increase levels of estrogen in the body. Dairy is very high in fat. Dropping a few pounds is good for your heart and it may also help with your hair loss!

Here is a link to another natural remedy for hair loss from my friend Donna Palmer - Emu Oil!

And, if all else fails - bald is "in" these days!
