Greetings! 

 

When I think of summer, I picture beaches, swimming, family get-togethers at the lake, relaxing in the sun...

Well, perhaps that's what it was like when we were all kids growing up, but it feels different now. More and more this summer I am seeing stressed out people attempting to do too many things and crumbling under the strain. I was feeling it myself this past week. When did it take longer to catch up after a week's vacation than the vacation itself?! 

This is a good reminder that self-care is an essential part of life. Once I was able to see myself getting worked up, and I remembered to get back into my rhythm of morning yoga and meditation, I felt better, and was able to accomplish so much more. Yesterday I even took time out to attend an open house at a friend's Yoga center and received a "gong bath;" if you've never had one of these, I highly recommend it. I felt so relaxed after this session of relaxation, which includes constant gong vibrations, that I needed a moment or two to remember how to drive back home!

The point is, we often concentrate on "getting things done" and forget to take care of ourselves. That simply wears down our resistance and generates a lot of stress hormone flowing into our tense bodies. My recommendation today is that you take time in the next week for some much needed meditation, or yoga, or whatever it is that brings you back to yourself and makes you feel grounded and refreshed. It's the most important thing you can do to stay healthy through the rest of the summer and throughout your life!

Simple Stress Relief 

Meditation does not mean sitting in an uncomfortable position feeling your legs fall asleep while attempting to empty your mind. Meditation is simply concentrating for a few minutes on your breath or a mantra (a phrase that's repeated over and over). You can do it sitting at your desk with your eyes closed for ten minutes or sitting in a comfortable chair in your living room before you start your day. 

The purpose of meditation is to distract your mind from the ever present "to do" list running through it so that both your mind and body can relax and come back into a natural state of well being.

Here is one of the first meditations that I learned - try it, you'll like it!

  • Sit in a comfortable position with your eyes closed
  • Relax your shoulders and lengthen your spine all the way up through your neck
  • Take a deep breath in and let it out slowly
  • Now as you inhale, say the word "So" to yourself, and as you exhale say "Hum" 

Continue for ten minutes and don't worry if your mind starts to wander, that's normal. Quietly bring yourself back to the awareness of your breath flowing in and out each time you find yourself thinking of something else and don't beat yourself up over it.  

If you make this simple ten minute practice a part of your daily routine, you'll begin to feel better and, best of all, you'll actually be more productive!
