Wow, I can't believe that 2012 is almost half over! How are you doing on your new year's resolutions; it's that time of year to revisit them. Look at your resolutions and congratulate yourself on your accomplishments, recommit to those you need to, and keep up the good work! 

Summer is the perfect time to get some extra workouts in and beef up your fitness regime. Most of us love being outside in the nice weather. We walk or hike more, swim, play soccer, tennis, golf, etc. If you want to "fit" more fitness into your summer schedule, here are a few great ideas:

  • Rise and shine ten minutes early and take a brisk walk around the block before beginning your day. This is an excellent way to get your blood pumping, brain focused and start your day on a cheerful note!
  • When you are mowing your lawn, as you walk, raise your knees high. You're mowing anyway, and the high stepping - like marching, gets your heart pumping for more aerobic benefit. Your heart will love it!
  • In summer, the sun is up much later, so there's plenty of sunshine to take another walk or jog in a park in the evening. One of my favorite things to do in summer is walk down to the beach and watch the sun set over the lake. We get an extra walk in, and spend time in nature, which helps lower blood pressure, reduce stress and calm our minds.

Meditative Walking 

Last week I promised another walking technique for all you city dwellers out there, so here it is! 

 

In the city, there are more noises - from cars, trucks, people talking and on most city sidewalks, people walking as well.

The best way to avoid being stressed out by all these distractions is to practice an easy Yoga breathing technique that combines a hand mudra with your breath and steps. Here's how it works:

 

The Mantra (phrase that's repeated) is Sa Ta Na Ma

When you think the word Sa, touch your thumb to your first finger. Ta - touch your thumb to your second finger, Na is the third finger and Ma is the pinky finger. Easy, huh?

 

Begin walking slowly and breathe deeply as you walk two steps for each syllable.  Inhale for the first two, exhale for the next two and so on. Once you are comfortable with the steps and your breathing has slowed down, you can inhale for one round of Sa, Ta, Na, Ma and exhale for the next.

 

This takes concentration, but is well worth the effort. After just 10 - 15 minutes of this meditative walking, you'll feel less stressed, calmer, and more focused for whatever comes next in your day. Your body and mind will thank you.
