 Greetings!

My Irises are blooming! The reason this is exciting news is that these are plants that moved with me from Maryland to The Berkshires and they have not bloomed in three years. At last I am enjoying these lovely blossoms. I've included a photo below. They sure are pretty! I really enjoy working in my garden. It's like a meditation in nature. Even more, I enjoy how the yard looks with the lovely flowers, healthy veggies and freshly mowed grass. Sometimes I feel like I could spend all day just walking around looking at it all...

I bring meditation into much of what I do on a regular basis, my gardening, my Yoga practice, even walking. Meditation is so good for your body, mind and spirit. If you have never done a walking meditation, try it this week and let me know how it makes you feel. I've included instructions below.

Today's newsletter also includes, information for you on a couple of fabulous books, and some humor to help you release those lovely endorphins.

And don't forget, about Ned's 100 mile bike ride this weekend for the American Cancer Society's Bicycles Battling Cancer. We all have a loved one who's living with cancer every day, or has passed away from this disease, there are just too many people suffering with this dreaded disease. I still remember how angry I was when I lost my brother Jack to cancer in 1993. He was one of the sweetest men in the world and there was nothing I could do...

Well, we can do something positive today - make a statement, fight back, go here to Kick Cancer's Butt!

Be part of the solution by supporting the ride, click here now! How much would it have been worth to you to have been able to send that friend or loved one another birthday card? I know I wish that Jack was still here with us celebrating every family reunion, birthday, and holiday!  Fight back, make a difference, support Ned's ride, click here now!

Thanks for your support, and, Best of Health,

Walking Meditation

I know walking meditation sounds like a contradiction in terms, I thought that the first time I heard of it as well.

I fell in love with it though, when we practiced it as a group during our Yoga training and I still do it often at home. I'm fortunate to live in a very rural area, the proverbial middle of nowhere. I look out my window every day and see nothing but Mother Nature all around me. If you live in town, I would suggest finding a park where you can try this walking meditation, it's better felt on grass. There is another type of meditative walking that can be done in the city and I'll describe that in next week's newsletter for my city dwelling friends.

Start by checking your posture. Stand tall, inhale deeply and feel as if you are lifting your rib cage up toward your head. This is a much better way to lengthen your spine. When you stand tall this way, you tend not to tense your shoulders and also your belly pulls in naturally so you are not forcing the little natural curve in your lower back to straighten. It's a more natural position for our spine.

Next notice your breath. Inhale deeply and exhale slowly. Now keep your head up, but bring your gaze toward the path in front of you and begin taking very slow steps. Feel your front heel touch the ground first and as you roll the rest of that foot onto the ground feel your back foot peeling off slowly starting with the heel and rolling forward to the toes. You will push gently from the toes of the back foot before bringing that one around and repeating your step with the other foot. Make the motion as slow and purposeful as possible. While walking slowly and steadily in this way, feel as if you are kissing the ground with your feet and barely leaving a footprint.

Continue this slow, steady walk and time it to your breaths. Inhale deeply for one step and exhale slowly for the next. This also helps you to slow your breathing down and take deeper breaths, which will lower your blood pressure and calm your mind.

Keep your focus on the steps. It's also easier to keep your knees slightly bent through all the movement. When you get going, it feels and looks like a Tai Chi movement.

Enjoy your walking meditation!

Your Tuesday Tickles

A famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store. He does a double take.

He knows that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for two dollars.

The storeowner replies, "I'm sorry, but the cat isn't for sale."

The collector says, "Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I'll pay you 20 dollars for that cat."

And the owner says "Sold," and hands over the cat.

The collector continues, "Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat's used to it and it'll save me from having to get a dish."

The owner says, "Sorry buddy, but that's my lucky saucer. So far this week I've sold sixty-eight cats.
