Greetings!
I love working in my garden! Spent the whole weekend raking, shoveling and then planting rows of veggies. There's just something about working the earth that soothes my busy mind and helps me to feel my connection to Mother Nature. She truly is amazing! As I was working in the garden I raked out a pile of ashes that Ned had moved to the garden last fall. It was from our fire pit. We love campfires - especially on cool fall evenings, but after several of them, the pile of ashes needs to be removed so that there's room for the wood. The amazing thing is that little tiny pine saplings were growing in the pile of garden ashes! In just a few short months, these little sprigs had sprung to life from a pile of "dead" ashes, like a phoenix. Life goes on.
You'll be glad to know that I was not gardening in the same the outfit as Maxine in today's comedy...
And I stopped every couple of hours to drink gallons of water and do some stretching. Sleeping Pigeon is one of my favorites when gardening and I've included instructions below. I also make sure that I relax all the muscles in my back with the relaxation technique from my "STOP Back Pain" book. It makes a huge difference!

Favorite Boomer Gardening Exercise |
Sleeping Pigeon is a yoga pose which stretches all of the muscles along the path of your sciatic nerve. I find this particular yoga pose elicits the largest number of "OMG!" responses from people with back pain. Begin in Downward Facing Dog pose with your weight on all four limbs, stretching your buttocks up toward the ceiling while at the same time stretching your heels toward the floor. If this is not possible for you, begin kneeling in a sort of table position.

Modified start from table position
Bring your right knee forward and place it between your hands on the floor with the lower leg angled slightly toward your left wrist. Lower your body down on top of the legs as far as possible (you can hold yourself up with your hands or arms) and stretch the left leg out straight behind you.
Relax and breathe deeply for two minutes.
To come out of the position, place your palms under your shoulders, inhale, and press into your palms as you lift your body back to Downward Facing Dog Pose or back to table position.
Repeat with the opposite leg.
