Has Spring really Sprung...?!

The other day I walked along the beach barefoot with my feet in the water. This is a mountain lake and I'm quite sure I've never done that this early in the season. I was wading along the edge where the water is shallow and the sunshine had been warming it all day, it sure felt good! I'm looking forward to an early summer.
Firstly, did you get outside a little last week? How did it make you feel? I heard from a few readers who walked at lunch time - good for you!
Also heard from some who have allergies, colds and other spring health issues, so this week I've included some information that will help you enjoy being outdoors.
I've been out walking almost every day and I feel more energized and joyous. I especially love listening to the sounds as I walk: spring peepers in the swamps and puddles, crows cawing in the trees, squirrels chasing each other about. The only creature I could have done without was the road kill skunk that stunk up the whole neighborhood...

Enjoy the humor, because after all, laughter is the best medicine - it's the best stress reducing technique I know! And don't miss the announcements and the book review.

Best of Health,

Spring Cold Remedy

Feeling like your immune system is under assault? There's nothing worse than a spring cold when you want to get outside after a long winter.
Try some astragalus. Obtained from the root of Astragalus membranaceus, in the pea family, astragalus has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine where it is used to ward off colds and flu. It is widely available and inexpensive, and can be beneficial for:

  • Those with immune deficiencies
  • People who want to boost their immunity during cold and flu season
  • Cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, which suppresses immune function

Astragalus is high in antioxidants, which protect cells against free radical damage. Researchers have found that astragalus has antiviral properties and stimulates the immune system, suggesting that it may help prevent colds. I usually include research studies for something I recommend in my writing, but there just aren't very many for this one; more studies are planned. There is one small double blind study (58 people), but science moves slowly and you have your cold or allergies today.

My own research over the last several years has shown that ALL of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Indian (Ayurvedic) medicines and therapies that have undergone extensive western studies, have been proven to be effective for exactly the health issues that eastern healers have been using them successfully for, for centuries.

So at this point I recommend trying astragalus, even the Mayo clinic suggests trying it - after checking with your physician. If it helps you, let me know, maybe we'll just conduct our own little study...
Standardized extracts of 0.4% 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy isoflavone 7 are suggested and they can be found in most large drug stores, Whole Foods and health food stores.

A LITTLE HUMOR FOR YOUR TUESDAY

Child Psychology

A new teacher thought she would use what she learned in her psychology courses. She said to her class, "Everyone who thinks they are stupid, please stand up."

After a few seconds, one boy stood. "Do you think you're stupid?" she asked.

"No, ma'am, but I didn't want you to have to stand there all by yourself."

 Ever Wonder...
What hair color do they put on the driver's licenses of bald men?

If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?
