Foods to Watch out for!

Is Grapefruit Juice Dangerous!?
According to a recent consumer alert from the Food and Drug Administration, the interaction of grapefruit juice and certain medications can be dangerous - good grief! It seems that grapefruit or grapefruit juice increases the absorption of certain drugs into the bloodstream so in effect you're getting more than the recommended dosage. This is one of those cases where more is definitely not better. Higher blood concentrations of statins have been known to cause liver damage and kidney failure.
Examples of some types of drugs that grapefruit juice can interact with are:
- Some statin drugs to lower cholesterol, such as Zocor (simvastatin), Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Pravachol (pravastatin)
- Some blood pressure-lowering drugs, such as Nifediac and Afeditab (both nifedipine)
- Some organ transplant rejection drugs, such as Sandimmune and Neoral (both cyclosporine)
- Some anti-anxiety drugs, such as BuSpar (buspirone)
- Some anti-arrhythmia drugs, such as Cordarone and Nexterone (both amiodarone)
- Some antihistamines, such as Allegra (fexofenadine)
Conversely, the opposite effect can happen with fexofenadine, the active drug in Allegra. Substances in the grapefruit juice block protein transporters that are needed to get this antihistamine into the body cells. Because of this, the medicine ends up being less effective in the body. Apple and orange juice can also interfere with fexofenadine so allergy sufferers should avoid these combinations.
Grapefruit juice does not affect all the drugs in the categories above. Ask your pharmacist or other health care professional to find out if your specific drug is affected.
Diet Soda can be poison!
According to a study that was published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, daily consumption of diet soda is linked with an increased risk for heart attack or stroke. An analysis of data gathered from more than 2,500 participants in New York City looked at the relationship between drinking soda (diet or regular) and cardiovascular disease risk. People who drank diet soda daily were 43 percent more likely to have a heart attack, stroke or other vascular event. Yikes!
I found a great substitute for all of you die hard (pun intended) diet soda drinkers. Zevia is sweetened with Stevia and has 0 calories and very little carbohydrates. It comes in lots of flavors too! |

A LITTLE HUMOR FOR YOUR TUESDAY
|
An Irishman walks into a bar and orders three glasses of Guiness, drinking them one at a time. Noticing this odd ritual, the bartender explains that the beer goes flat when poured and informs the man his beer would be much fresher if he ordered one glass at a time.
The Irishman explains he began this custom with his two brothers, who have moved to America and Australia, respectively. This is their way of remembering all the time they spent drinking together.
The man becomes a regular at the pub, well-known for always ordering three beers at once. One day he walks in and orders only two beers. Assuming the worst, a hush falls among other patrons.
The bartender quietly offers his condolences. The man looks confused for a moment, and then explains, "No, everyone's fine. I just gave up beer for lent."
