Greetings!
During February, most of us talk about our heart in some way. Our hearts are overjoyed and feeling love, or broken, or somewhere in between. Seldom is heart health mentioned in conversations at the water cooler, yet the health of our hearts is such an important topic.
I have included more information about keeping our hearts healthy in this week's newsletter. I want you to be healthy and vital and enjoy chasing your grandkids around as much as I do! Enjoy the last full week of February - not sure about you, but I am sooooooooo looking forward to Spring!
Best of Health,

More good news about Fish Oil!
|
We Baby Boomers invented multi-tasking and I'm quite sure that we'll continue to until we all leave the planet. So here's another tip just for us!
There has been a lot of press lately about the benefits of fish oil for heart health. Fish oil helps prevent inflammation, which helps to prevent dislodging arterial plaques (spelled: blood clots...) into the blood stream, reducing the chance of cardiac artery blockage. (And oh-by-the-way, reducing the risk of stroke too!)
We also know that exercise is good for our heart health. Now a new study has shown that combining fish oil with our exercise doubles our benefits! A two'fer, and who doesn't like that?!
Take your fish oil tabs and include a short strength training series in your program, and your muscles will be stronger and healthier!
This study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, followed 45 women over 60 who were split up into three groups. One group performed strength training only, the others performed the same strength training program and received fish oil supplementation of 2 g a day. Muscle strength and functional capacity were assessed before and after the training period. The study authors concluded that "Strength training increased muscle strength in all of the women. The inclusion of fish oil supplementation caused greater improvements in muscle strength and functional capacity."
This was a small study and more are planned, but I believe that the evidence is mounting for adding fish oil supplements to our daily vitamin regimen. This is just one more proof of their importance for helping us to "age well."
