Tips For Completing Fall Projects Safely!

Well, Fall is officially here and that means we'll be out raking leaves and turning our gardens over, cleaning out gutters, planting garlic and other bulbs.
I love the brilliant colors that fall brings to New England, but I have to admit that I over-did it in the garden the other day. As fit as I am, my back was bothering me the next day!
So this week I've included some tips that we all (including me) should follow when completing our long list of Fall chores.

Tips for Safe Completion of "Fall Chores" |
1. The most important thing to remember is hydration. When the cold weather starts, we tend not to drink as much water, yet when we are working in the yard or riding bikes, etc. we are still burning calories and working muscles that need to be hydrated. Drink lots of water while raking those leaves!
2. For better back safety when raking, switch dominant hands - in other words, if you usually hold the rake on the left side of your body, switch to the right side every 15 minutes for about 5 minutes. Same thing if you're shoveling in the garden, or using a hoe; this may feel a little awkward, but it helps to prevent straining one side of your spine.
3. Breathing deeply while working is essential but it's surprising how many people breathe shallowly while working in the yard. Put a string around your shovel or rake so that whenever you look at it, it will remind you to breathe deeply.
4. Stretch, stretch, stretch. Before you go outside, sit tall in your chair and do a little seated cat/cow (inhale and arch your back a little, stretching your neck up and then exhale and hunch slightly.) This warms up your back muscles before you start using them. Then, when you are done for the day, stretch again in Down Dog Yoga Pose for a few minutes. You'll be glad that you did!

George told his doctor, "I have poor eyesight, but when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, poof! The light goes on. When I'm done, poof! The light goes off."
"Wow, that's incredible," the doctor said.
A little later in the day, the doctor called George's wife.
"Ethel," he said, "George is doing fine! But I had to call you because I'm curious about something. Is it true that when he gets up during the night to go to the bathroom that, poof, the light goes on in the bathroom, and when he's done, poof, the light goes off?"
"Oh, my!" Ethel exclaimed, "He's peeing in the refrigerator again!"
