You Know You've Turned Into a Mom When...
You automatically double-knot everything you tie. You find yourself humming the Barney song as you do the dishes. You hear a baby cry in the grocery store, and you start to gently sway back and forth, back and forth. Even though your children are at school... You actually start to like the smell of strained carrots mixed with applesauce. You weep through the scene in Dumbo when his mom is taken away, not to mention what Bambi does to you. You get soooo into crafts you contemplate writing a book called 101 Fun Crafts to do with Dryer Lint and Eggshells. You spend a half hour searching for your sunglasses only to have your teenager say, "Mom, why don't you wear the ones you pushed up on your head?" You are out for a nice romantic meal with your husband, enjoying some real adult conversation, when suddenly you realize that you've reached over and started to cut up his steak! I Miss My Mom's Oatmeal Raisin Cookies!
|
"The things you can give to you children next to good habits, are good memories." Sydney J. Harris
May is the month we celebrate Mom, and also remember our fallen warriors. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms still with us and thoughts of remembrance to those no longer here, my own mom passed away in 2007. Just the other day I made the oatmeal raisin cookies that she used to make for me, and it made me think about the several road trips we made together to visit my sister down in Virginia. Talking and eating cookies for 8 hours sure made the time go quickly! I often think of both her and my brother Michael, a fallen hero from the Viet Nam era. Sometimes, something will happen - a scent on a passing breeze, an old photograph like the one above, or a phone call from a sibling and I'll feel their presence and smile.

And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me."

MAY: MOTHERS AND FALLEN HEROES...
|

Remembering our fallen heroes once a year is a lovely practice, but with war being waged on several different fronts these days, many moms are worried about, or have lost a son or daughter in Iraq or Afghanistan. Perhaps we'd be better served by concentrating more on how to bring peace than making war. As a mom myself, that's my sentiment.
Several studies have been done that show when several people meditate on peace in a certain area, there is less violent crime in that city or county. Let's all spend at least five minutes a day this month meditating on peace for all the citizens of earth, and visualizing all of our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters coming back home very, very soon.
This month's tip is a meditation for peace. I have posted here many times the benefits for our own health and well-being that meditation brings. Based on the studies done, we know can also help others, so let's all try this peace meditation:
Inhale deeply and say to yourself "Peace", exhale long and slow and think the word "Now". Inhale peace, exhale now, etc. Continue for five minutes or more every day while visualizing our soldiers returning home - see their wives, husbands, children, mothers hugging them, neighbors coming out to welcome them home and thanking them for their service. Smile and thank them yourself.
This is a simple meditation that anyone can do. Let's all make a difference starting now.
Best of Health,
Kathi
