September is Healthy Aging Month - Great!
Perfect for all you Healthy Baby Boomers!
I'm delighted to see the headlines about Baby Boomers like John Goodman and Drew Carey making conscious decisions to stop advancing the aging clock. They've lost significant weight, reduced dangerous heart disease symptoms and now feel energized and sexy. Goodman used a health coach to drop his excess weight and is not only thinner, but stronger and more nimble than before he started working with a coach. He has made lifestyle changes that fit in with his regular routine and don't make him feel deprived, and he feels younger, and has a new zest for life. On the Letterman show, he said that he was making a lifetime commitment to his health. Hooray for John Goodman!
If you are looking to make a healthy lifestyle a part of your life story, start with a few simple steps. Here are three that I recommend to my own coaching clients:
1. Eat an apple half an hour before dinner at least four times a week. The fiber in the apple will make you feel fuller and then you won't eat as much at dinner.
2. Start a food log. You'll be amazed at the choices you'll make once you actually see what you're eating on a daily basis. Pick up a notebook and start writing down everything you put into your mouth. Many people shed pounds just by adding this one small step that doesn't cost a dime and takes very little time out of your daily schedule. When you start writing and realize that you've already had an ice cream, you'll choose something else.
3. Try guacamole on your crackers instead of cheese. Avocados are much healthier and you can make your own guacamole easily with my friend Ned's recipe below!

NED'S GREAT GUACAMOLE |
Mash up 2 avocados, add 1 tsp. crushed garlic, 1 tsp. red onion chopped very fine, and squeeze the juice from ¼ lime into the mixture. Mix it up good and add salt and pepper to taste, and a dash of cayenne for some extra zip - Yummmmmm! |
