Healthy Ways To Celebrate This Month! |
July is the month that we in the United States celebrate our independence. It's also Family Reunion month and National Grilling Month. Cool! Well, my plans fit right in with these themes. We're starting the week-end of the 4th off with fireworks and cannons at Tanglewood on Friday evening, then, I'm planning a family BBQ after the big parade on Saturday, and later that night singing around the campfire. I envision a sunny day and Mother Nature better see fit to provide it!
My family is a crazy bunch, who loves to sing, play guitars, and laugh. We do a lot of laughing and hugging whenever we're together and both of these activities release endorphins (feel good hormones) and other chemicals into our bodies. These chemicals boost our immunity, raise levels of Vitamin D, lower blood pressure and reduce the levels of stress hormones in our bodies. That's the kind of multi-tasking I like! Fun, and good for your health at the same time!
Add laughter to your July activity calendar and your body will thank you. Plan to take in a funny movie with your family or tell funny stories and jokes around a campfire or even have a silly outfit afternoon.

Healthy GRILLING with the MIGHT SHITAKE! |
One of my favorite grilling foods also helps boost your immunity - Shitake mushrooms, yummm! The mighty Shiitake has proven anti-viral and cholesterol-reducing properties. Certain extracts of Shiitake mushrooms are used in Japan to strengthen the immunity of cancer patients during chemotherapy and radiation. You can find them in grocery stores and Asian markets. Look for the larger caps that are light brown in color as these are perfect for grilling. Here's my summertime grill recipe:
Cut the stems off your Shiitakes, wipe them with a paper towel and then marinate them for about 30 minutes in your favorite oil and vinegar dressing. They'll be too mushy of you marinade them for too long, so be careful about that. When your grill is good and hot, place the mushroom caps on your grate for about 5 minutes on each side. If you like cheese, cut a few thin slices of a hard cheese like goat gouda or manchego and put them on top of the inside of the cap for a minute or two until it melts and then serve with other grilled vegetables like summer squash, sweet potatoes, leeks, garlic, asparagus, and peppers .
These veggies provide the nutrients your body needs, taste great grilled and can be found in farmers markets just about anywhere during the summer, which also makes them less expensive! |
