Are you ready?
In this month's newsletter I've included a few tips for a healthy, safe summer.
TIP ONE
Sunscreen is not the "be all, end all" of skin protection. The latest studies have found that many sunscreens which claim to have an SPF of 50, seriously overestimate the amount of protection they actually give. Many people - especially children, have been seriously sun burned even though they were slathered in sunscreen.
Currently, the largest Vitamin deficiency in the US is Vitamin D, the "sunshine vitamin", so we do need to make sure we're getting a few minutes of sunshine each day. My advice is to use a sunscreen, but wait 15 minutes before putting it on - and set your watch alarm or a kitchen timer to make sure that you don't forget. Also, don't rely solely on the sunscreen - wear a hat, use a beach umbrella, and wear a beach cover-up.
TIP TWO
Even just sitting outside watching the grandkids play baseball on a hot day can cause your body to sweat - it's a natural process that the body uses to try to cool itself down in hot temperatures. Water is really the best drink for hydrating your body, but if you don't like the taste of water, try adding a slice of lime or making your own lemonade with water and lemons, but stay away from caffeinated beverages like iced coffee, iced tea, or colas because caffeine dehydrates you even further.
Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. These are readily available in the summer and can help keep you hydrated, but how often do we find ourselves forgetting about the veggies? We all have a tendency to eat more processed food during the summer months because it's easier. We're too busy or too hot to prepare our own food so we eat in restaurants, pick up take-out, or grill hamburgers and hot dogs. Let's rethink grilling this year and pick up some summer squash, tomatoes, onions and sweet potatoes and leave the hot dog and hamburger buns on the shelves.
Did you know that sweet potatoes are loaded with Beta-carotene (Vitamin A) which is a powerful antioxidant, and helps us make strong joints? One small sweet potato has 38,433 IU of Vitamin A - Wow! This mighty sweet potato also has 76 milligrams of Calcium, and 950 milligrams of Potassium. I love my sweet potatoes grilled. Just wash them, poke a hole in them and grill them over medium high heat for about 10 minutes on each side - Yumm! You'll be surprised at how juicy they taste right off the grill. If you serve up a load of veggies with your burgers you can skip the buns and start a whole new trend - let's go for it!
Best of Health,
Kathi

RECOMMENDED READING!
Louise Hay's newest book hit the book stores by storm this month. It's called "Experience Your Good Now!" and it's another best seller from one of my favorite authors.
Those of you who have read my book, "Get Off The Couch, Potato" will feel her presence in it. Louise writes: "An affirmation opens the door. It's a beginning point on the path to change. In essence, you're saying to your subconscious mind: "I am taking responsibility. I am aware that there is something I can do to change." When I talk about doing affirmations, I mean consciously choosing words that will either help eliminate something from your life or help create something new in your life."
Louise is giving away a spot on her next "I Can Do It" Caribbean Cruise to one lucky winner who picks up this great book now! I got my copy, entered my name, got another for my sister and entered her name too.
Keeping my fingers crossed that we'll see each other on that cruise!
