Emporia Main Street E- Newsletter |
Greetings!
In this "stripped down" version of the weekly E-News, we're taking a closer look at the myriad of events on the horizon. There is always A LOT to do in Emporia, but during December, A LOT goes into overdrive... Keep reading and get involved! |
|
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year-
now GET OUT AND ENJOY IT!!!
Businesses and customers are in for a grand Christmas Season this year in Emporia! We have a lot of events coming up VERY QUICKLY! Read below for more info!
November 29th- The Chamber Christmas Parade. 7:00 p.m. in downtown Emporia.- As one business owner reminded us (thank you Steve Corbin), it is a good idea to have cookies, hot drinks or some sort of "catch" item to pull people into your store. Don't have it right up front... Pull people back into your store prior to, during and after the parade!
Click HERE to view some of the Midnight Madness Specials!
Click HERE to view some of the Quarter Mania Participants!
ALL of the Emporia Main Street Holiday Stroll Activities are brought to you through the contributions of our Red Ribbon Merchants: Bath Expressions, Brown's Shoe Fit, Complete Works, Dan's Hands, the Emporia Arts Council, Forget Me Not, Graves Drug Store, IM Design Group, Lyon County Title, L & L Pets, Plum Bazaar, Poehler Mercantile, Pro Cuts, Stanley Jewelry, Studio 11, Town Crier and Twisted Sisters. Thank these Members for making the above events possible this Holiday Season!

Plumb Place Emporia Artists Show and SALE!
December 2nd from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Click HERE to register on-line for the Expo!
There is A LOT to do this holiday season, but don't think that means automatic business for you... You have to market yourself, take advantage of the opportunities that are out there, advertise and get involved! A little work on your part (and spending on advertising) can pay dividends. People have too many options for businesses to expect sales simply because they are open. With the list of events above, how are you taking advantage? |
|
Did you know? Answers to YOUR questions...
 | | Celebrate our Emporia History with this collectable ornament of Anderson Library on the old C of E Campus! The ornaments are a suggested donation of $10 each and can be found at a variety of Main Street Member Businesses! |
Last week was a shortened week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, but we still managed to accomplish quite a bit. We helped fill out two "part one" applications for businesses seeking to utilize historic tax credits, we met with a local company about mobile applications (and started the production of a "white paper" to partner with other area organizations), we met with a promising entrepreneurial group that you'll hear more from this spring, we did a studio interview with KISS about upcoming events, we took the last ESU Presidential Candidate spouse on a tour of downtown, we met with elements of the RAIL group seeking to bring passenger rail back to Emporia, we did some training with Kari's Bridal, we met with a local grant writer looking to donate her time, we facilitated the transition of a business between two groups, we were part of a KVOE "Newsmaker" for the upcoming Granada Bridal and Prom Expo, we volunteered at the local Optimist Tree lot and got to visit some local businesses for holiday shopping... It was another productive week, with some good questions from all of you!...
1. "Why does Emporia have such a low pull factor?" From a community member. We don't. The city of Emporia actually has a pull factor of 1.12 according to the Kansas Department of Revenue for 2010 (Click HERE for the report). Emporia has the 16th highest population in the state of Kansas, and we also have the 16th highest city pull factor according to the 2010 report. There is also a report for Lyon County (Click HERE) and the Lyon County pull factor is .88. A pull factor of 1 indicates a local economy in perfect balance; where sales leaving the area are replaced by sales coming into an area. Although we always want a higher pull factor, looking at the map of surrounding areas shows that we showed significant improvements in our pull factor from 2009 to 2010 (up 7.9%, which was the 6th highest positive improvement in the state!), which is interesting, because the majority of businesses added during that time frame were locally owned small businesses, hmmmm. Oh, and for those that continue to compare us to Manhattan (even though it is a bad comparison) their county pull factor was .83, or .05 under ours. Continually trying to convince the community that we have a shopping crisis here damages community morale. We have a lot to be proud of in Emporia, and with some hard work and intelligent planning we can continue to improve.
 | | Looking for the perfect gift for your staff or someone on your Christmas list? How about the gift of shopping LOCAL! With an Emporia Main Street Gift Certificate, member businesses keep 100% of the proceeds, and you can use them at ANY member throughout Emporia. (Just look at the extensive members listing to your left...) |
2. "How did you get all the lights hung downtown so quickly?" From a a friend. I didn't. Becky Smith and I wrapped lights on about 10 poles downtown. The rest were done by Lane Hollern of L & L Pets (stop in and tell him "good job") The City of Emporia helped wrap the tops of some of the taller trees downtown and they set the Christmas wreaths. Staff did a little, but we depend on volunteers to do a LOT!
 | | Thank you to the City of Emporia and Lane Hollern of L & L Pets for doing another wonderful job of lighting downtown Emporia this Christmas season! |
3. "Where is the passenger rail process at?" From someone that stopped by the office. Pastor Andrew McHenry has things moving along. If you are interested in participating in committees for Fundraising, Marketing or other activities, please contact Emporia Main Street and we'll get you connected to the appropriate people.
 | | Are you ready for carriage rides? They start THIS THURSDAY and are just a $5 suggested donation per person! Come downtown and view our wonderful shops in a horse drawn carriage with friends and family! |
4. "Why did you put so much emphasis on Small Business Saturday?" From a member. It is important to remind people that the easiest way to stimulate the economy is to shop locally. We tell people to shop local, but we rarely follow that up with the "why" behind it. Frankly, if your job includes tax dollars or the dependance of other local businesses, shopping local helps keep you employed. If you like things like streets, sidewalks and other local infrastructure, shopping local allows our community to afford those things. Plus, I always get better service locally and can find things that are more unique for people on my Christmas list. And, shopping local inspires our next generation of shop owners. We put more emphasis on shopping local this year because we had a little more time to plan AND we are starting to see a larger portion of the population that are starting to get it, which is a good thing...
 | | Make "THIS PERSON" you this holiday season! Shopping local not only gives people on your list unique gifts, but it also helps grow local jobs, add new businesses and support the tax base. Have fun AND build the local economy! |
5. "How was your Thanksgiving?" From several people. It was mainly very nice. I spent two meals with family and one event with local friends. Thanksgiving is always a holiday of reflection, and I am very thankful for the community we have, and the Main Street volunteers working hard to make it better!
 | | Are you ready for the madness? This version of the Midnight Madness has more participants, bigger deals and more fun than ever before! Come out on December 8th from 8:00 p.m. to midnight and join the Madness with Emporia Main Street! |
