The most dangerous statement any business can make during the 4th quarter is "It's the holidays, people will just find us..."  While it is true that more people will be out-and-about shopping, it is also true that people have more business choices than ever.  What are you doing to stand out?  How are you advertising your business with local media?  How are you getting involved in existing activities?  What is your marketing plan?  How can you set yourself apart this season?

I know you are all busy, but a little planning now can produce big impacts for your business later.  Look through the list and get involved in YOUR holiday activities!

Did you know?  Answers to YOUR questions...

Last week we attended a community visioning session, gave a speech to a local study group, met with people concerning

Terry Maxwell Print
This Terry Maxwell Print is one of several unique items available at the auction.

passenger rail service options in Emporia, we had a "retail meeting" at the Trusler Center, met with Ben Moore and a community group about Neighborhood Revitalization Programs, participated in a curiculum discussion at Emporia High School, conducted a site visit for a potential new community business, met with local leaders planning a summer event in Emporia, conducted a board meeting and did a lot of work in planning this weeks Auction, Haunted Tours and other upcoming activities!  As always, we got some great community questions, and below are your answers...

1.  "What are the auction items looking like?" From a board member.  We have some cool stuff!  Artwork, sports memoribilia, advertising packages, trips, wine baskets, gift sets, "mystery boxes", home decore items, collectables and MUCH more!  Click HERE for the current auction guide (we are adding more items daily)!

2.  "What is a "comparable" city/why is that important?"  From a volunteer after a study meeting. "Comparable" cities are the communities most like us in population, median household income, trade area population, demographics and proximity to other markets.  We look at comparable communities when making decisions because looking at cities with much larger trade market area populations or median incomes would lead us to take unatainable actions.  Looking at communities that are our relative size and make up (or that are smaller with lower median household incomes) allows us to scale up programs to encourage success in an R & D (rip-off and duplicate) format.  We are all pro-growth and we all want positive community development in Emporia, but we may differ on what those ambiguos buzz words actually mean.  When we start talking about how to grow in a sustainable fashion, how to create jobs that raise our median houshold income and how to encourage area population growth, that's when making smart decisions based on comparable data is important.

3.  "Do you ever get frustrated?" From a ladies study group I spoke with last week, and a volunteer that stopped by the office, and another social visit... Sure...  I have some virtues, but patience really isn't one of them, so frustration is bound to happen from time to time.  It was a little weird to get three different variations of the same question in the same week, but a little frustration is actually a good thing.  Frustration generally occurs when you are working on difficult issues, you have a ton of items on your plate or you are engaged in discussions with opposing view points.  Difficult issues (if you are pushing hard) are simply part of life, a full slate of activities results from the desire to create positive community changes and opposing view points lead to better decision making.  Frustration is an indicator that we are working hard to move this community, our member businesses and this organization in the right direction.

4.  "What can we do to get involved with Freedom Fest?" From a local group. Volunteer opportunities are plentiful...  People can occupy turns on the 5K race route, they can help with set up, they can assist with tear down, they can help with the awards ceremony and we have several other jobs that we welcome help with both prior to and during the event.  Freedom Fest raises money for the local All Veteran's Memorial, so any assistance provided goes to support an excellent cause.  If you want to get involved, simply contact the Emporia Main Street office at 620-340-6430 or e-mail us at main.street@emporia-kansas.gov

5. "What more can be done to improve downtown?"  From a community member. We have a great downtown, but a lot more can be done to create more business, reverse sales leakage and produce a better community for our citizens, ESU Students and visitors to our community.  No area of a community will every be "done".  Things change, businesses change, communities change.  Managed adaptation ensures that we can guide positive changes.  We know that we need to create more entrepreneurial businesses that address market leakage.  We know that we need to create more destination businesses.  We know that we need to take additional steps to support existing businesses.  We need to promote infill developement for vaccant  or underutilized lots and the redevelopment of underutilized buildings.  We need to create more upper story housing.  We need to ensure that we can tie our existing event facilities together with the infrastructure necessary to create synergy and increased usage.  We need to create business types that allow us to eventually promote sub-districts within the downtown.  We need to transition businesses to future generations to ensure district stability.  We need to improve communication with people throughout the community to ensure they know about businesses, activities and resources throughout Emporia.  We need to develop stronger mutually beneficial relationships with entities like ESU and FHTC that are critical to the future of our community.  We need to remember that in a smaller community, you can't be all things to all people and it's better to do a few things very well rather than trying to become Johnson County...  So, a LOT can be done to improve downtown.

The volunteers, members and staff of Emporia Main Street are working extremely hard to improve our business climate and build a successful community.  In short, we are working hard FOR YOU!  We appreciate your support, and we will continue to aggressively pursue opportunities to benefit our membership in the future.  Because, as we all know: small steps lead to BIG impacts!
