Well, we've just returned from a fantastic vacation in France, and between the wine tasting, the café-sitting, and the train rides we actually spent some time thinking about you, our friends and clients. Even en vacances, we are constantly on the lookout for ideas and inspiration, ways to make our products even more unique, durable, and affordable.
Through several conversations with the locals, we found that the closest French translation for cabinet is placard. That word actually connotes 'cupboard,' which is indicative of the way cabinets function in the French home. Here in North America, cabinetry is a fixed part of the home: present before you move in, remaining after you move out. In France, the cabinetry is designed to belong to the owner, transferring easily from home to home with an eye to durability, ease of installation and simple assembly. We try to apply this European sensibility to our work as well, with products that are designed to last and to look good longer.
Two years ago, it seemed that every little village in Southern France had its own resident cabinet shop. This trip we noticed economic hard times had taken their toll in Provence too. Many of those cabinet and furniture shops were empty. We did stroll down the Boulevard St. Germain in Paris's chic 6th arrondissement and got a chance to see the latest and greatest in European kitchen and bath design. We garnered a few new ideas and also a whole lot of affirmation that we're on the right track.
The Europeans really led the movement toward efficient, streamlined cabinet production, with capable software and quality machines and robots. We've embraced the best of these technologies and even improved on them with our unique construction method for strength and longevity.
In short, we saw some neat stuff: well-made, well-designed... we got some ideas from the cabinet makers on the other side of the pond. But with our locally sourced, environmentally friendly, high quality and high design placards, we still think we do it best.
