Dear Fellow Birder,
Both Microsoft and Apple have recently released new operating systems. We wanted to let you know how this has affected our birding software.
Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6
Two New Operating Systems
Windows 7: Microsoft released a new operating system yesterday called Windows 7. This is the successor to Vista and XP. We have tested our birding software on Windows 7 and have not experienced any problems.

Macintosh: Apple released a new operating system a month ago called Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). This caused compatibility problems with our software. We are currently in the middle of a major rewrite of the Mac version so that it will work on Mac computers running Snow Leopard.

We hope to release a new version 3.9.9 for Mac computers at the end of November. This will be available to current owners of any Mac program for $20 - this includes shipping and handling charges.

Our next Newsletter will include full details on how to get the new disc. Please note, the new disc will NOT work on the older OS X 10.3.9 (Panther). It will work on Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.

The Moral of This Story: Any time Microsoft or Apple release a new operating system, this can have a huge impact on all software programs you have installed on your computer.

Here at Thayer Birding Software, we will let you know if we think it is OK to upgrade to the new operating system. If you use your birding program a lot, you may want to wait and see what we discover before proceeding with the installation of a new operating system on your computer.

We list all the approved operating systems for our birding software on our packaging and on our web site.
Creating Birds of Colombia Quizzes
Gold edition Quiz Feature
I am heading off to Colombia in February for a few weeks of birding with Steve Hilty (the VENT leader who wrote Birds of Colombia).

I am preparing for the trip by creating my own series of quizzes for the birds we are likely to see. I started by opening the Gold edition and clicking the Quizzes icon. Then I clicked "Manage My Quizzes" and created a category called South American Birds. Under this category I created individual quizzes for each day of the trip, such as "Colombia - Otun/Quimbaya Sanctuary."

Then I entered the names of the birds I hoped to see and imported two photos and one song for each bird. (I could also import video clips if I had them.) Finally, I assigned certain birds to each daily quiz.

This was all very easy to do. In fact, there are video tutorials on our web site that will guide you through the entire process.

Where Do You Find Photos?: I found great photos of the birds of Colombia on the Internet. I am using these images for my own private use -- I am not posting them on other web sites or selling the images, so this is OK to do.

Go to www.Google.com, type in the name of any bird and click "images." Look for an image that is over 400 pixels wide, click on the image and then click "See full size image." Now right-click on the image and save it in a temporary folder on your desktop.

Where Do You Find Bird Songs?: I found exactly what I needed in the Nature Sounds section of OnlineNatureMall.com. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology makes a 7-CD set called "Bird Sounds of the Colombian Andes." I bought this set and took it home.

I opened iTunes on my computer, inserted the first disc and said I wanted to import the songs to iTunes. The computer did the rest. This created an mp3 file for each song. Again, these files are for my own private use -- I am not shaing them with anyone else or posting them to a web site or selling them.

Taking a Quiz
I can now take four different types of quizzes - my favorite is the Pick One quiz that shows four different images and asks me to selct a specific species. Since I imported two images for each bird, I have these images appear in random order. I could also quiz myself on just the songs if I wanted to!

The ability to make a quiz on foreign birds (or anything else!) is available only in the Gold edition. You can get 20% off the Gold edition by entering the promotional code W428 during checkout.
