I am preparing for the trip by creating my own series of quizzes for the birds we are likely to see. I started by opening the Gold edition and clicking the Quizzes icon. Then I clicked "Manage My Quizzes" and created a category called South American Birds. Under this category I created individual quizzes for each day of the trip, such as "Colombia - Otun/Quimbaya Sanctuary."
Then I entered the names of the birds I hoped to see and imported two photos and one song for each bird. (I could also import video clips if I had them.) Finally, I assigned certain birds to each daily quiz.
This was all very easy to do. In fact, there are
video tutorials on our web site that will guide you through the entire process.
Where Do You Find Photos?: I found great photos of the birds of Colombia on the Internet. I am using these images for my own private use -- I am not posting them on other web sites or selling the images, so this is OK to do.
Go to
www.Google.com, type in the name of any bird and click "images." Look for an image that is over 400 pixels wide, click on the image and then click "See full size image." Now right-click on the image and save it in a temporary folder on your desktop.
I opened iTunes on my computer, inserted the first disc and said I wanted to import the songs to iTunes. The computer did the rest. This created an mp3 file for each song. Again, these files are for my own private use -- I am not shaing them with anyone else or posting them to a web site or selling them.
Taking a Quiz
I can now take four different types of quizzes - my favorite is the Pick One quiz that shows four different images and asks me to selct a specific species. Since I imported two images for each bird, I have these images appear in random order. I could also quiz myself on just the songs if I wanted to!
The ability to make a quiz on foreign birds (or anything else!) is available only in the Gold edition. You can get
