Graduate Entrepreneurs Association Fall Retreat & Reception | October 19,  Boulder   Each year Leeds faculty, MBA students, alumni and mentors gather off-campus to network and attend panel sessions on enterprise and entrepreneurship. CU New Venture Challenge 2011-12 Kickoff | October 25 6:00 PM, Wolf Law   During this, the fourth year of "CU NVC," students from across campus will pitch their business ideas and plans to audiences, judges and mentors; the finalists will go on to compete for prizes and recognition at the championships in March. This year's kickoff will feature one of Boulder's most engaging and dynamic entrepreneurs: Orbotix CEO and Deming Center Advisory Board Member Paul Berberian. Pre-Kickoff networking at 5:30, event at 6:00. Stick around after the main event for networking and light refreshments. Learn more about the New Venture Challenge and its calendar of events.

Raising the Barista | The Trep Cafe, located near the business library at the north end of the 2nd floor of the Koelbel Building, launched its web site as well as beverage and catering services for Leeds departments, offices and clubs. The cafe is a student-run, non-profit organization founded by undergraduates from the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship, and its proceeds fund Leeds student scholarships. Visit the web site, order catering, or say hello. 

 

Minds Met |  About 30 Leeds students volunteered their time to the Meeting of the Minds 2011 conference that the Deming Center co-hosted September 21-23 at the St. Julien Hotel. In addition to panel sessions, the conference guests could opt in to an electric vehicle tour and a tour of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute.

a 50-mile range.
Toyota Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) were on hand, as well as the City of Boulder's Ford Escape hybrid courtesy of Joe Castro, Boulder's facilities and fleet manager.  Leeds School of Business faculty member David Payne brought his Prius hybrid modified with a Hymotion plug-in module from A123, and Rocky Mountain Segway displayed a product from its fleet.  

Real Deals 

  

Cleantech and the West |  CU-Boulder is the Western Midwest Region Winner of a three-year Department of Energy award to host a regional student-based cleantech competition.  The competition supports CU-Boulder's CU Cleantech New Venture Challenge, in which students develop successful business plans and join a new generation of American clean energy leaders. It is designed to build partnerships among regional entrepreneurs and innovators at universities, national laboratories, and other organizations. Learn more about the award at the DOE web site.

Recognitions and Achievements

Board Members on the Move | Congratulations to Deming Center Advisory Board Member Frances Draper, who was appointed to the post of Vice Chancellor for Strategic Relations. She'll take her post on October 1, 2011. In this capacity, Draper will coordinate all external and internal communications, branding, alumni activities, government and business relations, reputation management and strategic relationship development for the CU-Boulder campus.     

 

touchPoint Partners, led by Deming Center Advisory Board Member Casey Verbeck, unleashes its [i4c] campaign the weekend of October 1 in front of an audience of 27,000 at Red Rocks Amphitheater. The campaign will continue, in several ongoing engagements, through 2012 in various Denver Metro area venues.  [i4c] "ensures the good of tomorrow by supporting responsible businesses today." In other news, Verbeck has been invited by the White House to join a select group of investors, entrepreneurs, corporations, foundations and the Administration that will collaborate on creating an Impact Economy. Participants will provide input on how to stimulate support for impact investments and emerging entrepreneurs focused on social innovation.

Michael Conger, PhD Candidate

Students on the Move  


Leeds PhD candidate Michael Conger needs help from entrepreneurs like you. In cooperation with the Deming Center, the Leeds School of Business and the Wharton School of Business, he's conducting a study that will be presented at the NYU/Stern Social Entrep-reneurship Conference in November. When you complete a 10-minute online questionnaire about your experiences, you advance the study and practice of entrepreneurship. Conger and his colleagues will share the study results with participants; look for details at the end of the survey.

Twenty six MBA students with exceptional academic qualifications  participated in the 5th anniversary of "the Trek," a Leeds tradition of connecting Boulder and other business epicenters. This year's Wall Street Trek included visits with Goldman Sachs, Barclays, Franklin Templeton, Stifel Nicolaus, G. Chris Andersen, Millennium Partners and more. Past Treks have taken students to meet entrepreneurs and alumni in Silicon Valley and to Omaha to meet Warren Buffett.
