!!HELP WITH MY STASH!! Fabric Challenge Winner
how about a scrap quilt or 2????

Start by going through your home fabric stash.  Any piece that is less than ½ yard should be used for scrap quilts.  Sort the pieces by color, light and darks of any color should be separated too.  You will have many piles of blues (make sure you don't make more than 3 piles of a color - sorting by different shades) and likewise for each color.  Separate out pure whites, beige tonals, and light colored backgrounds that have bits of color too.   For some of you it will take weeks to just sort the fabric.  Put the sorts in baskets/containers (Target & Walmart have really great deals on these) to get ready to cut."

Now for the next step:

Go through the fabric you have organized in baskets and pull out pieces that are 1/3 yard or more.  Cut off 12" (1/3 yard) and start a new "sort" of 12" pieces by color and value (light, medium, dark).  If you have pieces that are "almost 12", like 11" or so" include them in the 12" sort.

Fabric pieces that are odd shapes, like squares (whatever size) can be further sorted by shape.  Unless you have a lot of these odd shapes then don't bother with this step now.

Fabric that is less than 11" should be cut into strips.  I generally cut 1 ½", 2" and 2 ½" strips and sort these by value (light, medium, dark) without regard to color.  You will have 3 baskets of each value and each size:

3 baskets of light 1 ½", 2" and 2 ½"strips
3 baskets of medium 1 ½", 2" and 2 ½"strips
3 baskets of dark 1 ½", 2" and 2 ½"strips

By now you might have noticed that you have a lot of one value (maybe lights) and not many darks.  You could be storing lots of red and pinks and no yellow and oranges, etc.  Most quilters lean toward particular colors more often (I am a blue person who is quite partial to Batiks - as if you could tell by our collection at Q&SF).  If you have a lot more of one color or value than others I will help you even out your stash next month and give you another...hopefully final organizational step!

GLOVES IN A BOTTLE

The chilling cold of the winter months can take a heavy toll on your skin. According to the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) figures, 81 million Americans all across the country will be looking for relief from dry, itchy skin this winter.

"Winter weather is one the main causes of dry, itchy skin," says Dr. Peter Helton, a board-certified dermatologist from Southern California. "The low humidity that occurs as a result of indoor heating can wreak havoc with your skin's ability to stay moisturized."

Your outer layer of skin is made up of dead skin cells, natural oils and lipids (fats).

It is designed by nature to protect your deeper layers of skin from irritants and toxins. Dry, itchy skin is nature's way of letting you know that this protective barrier has been stripped away," says Dr. Helton.

In the colder parts of the country the numbers suffering from dry skin rise dramatically. "Most people in our area suffer from dry skin in the winter," comments Dr. Brian Zogg, a dermatologist who has a clinic in southern Minnesota. "Our harsh winter conditions can cause severe dry skin problems."

These dry skin conditions are aggravated by everyday activities - most soaps and cleansers contain fragrances, colorants, antibacterial agents and other ingredients that strip away the protective elements of the outer layer of your skin.

The traditional prescription for treating dry skin has been a cream or lotion with moisturizers in it, in an attempt to replace the lost moisture and oils in the skin.

Now new research has revealed that this may in fact be sending your skin a "negative" message.

Daily use of conventional lotions (artificial moisturizers) can cause your skin to produce less natural moisture where it is really needed - below the outer layer of skin. And this is the only place moisture can resolve a dry skin condition. "When the skin gets this 'negative message' from artificial moisturizers, it can make it more difficult for the skin to heal," says Dr. Zogg. Research into this problem has produced a completely new type of lotion, called a shielding lotion, that's getting remarkable results. "A shielding lotion is far superior for treating dry, itchy skin because it bonds with the outer layer of the skin and replaces the protective barrier, keeping the irritants out and your own natural oils and moisture in," explains Dr. Helton.

"
Shielding lotions don't wash or rub off," agrees Dr. Zogg. "Because a shielding lotion stays on and protects the skin it's a very effective treatment for the dry skin conditions we see here in the winter months."

"Severe dry skin conditions need to be treated with prescription medication for the inflammation along with a lotion to moisturize and help heal the skin. With a shielding lotion we find that the skin heals much faster, so the patient needs less medication," says Dr. Helton.

Good news for the millions who suffer with dry skin each year. Shielding Lotion can prevent a costly trip to your dermatologist and keep your skin silky smooth all winter.

WHAT:        Quilting with Machines, A Learning Experience Conference
     WHEN:        September 22-25, 2010
WHERE:       Sawmill Creek Resort & Convention Center (Huron, OH)

Quilting with Machine's goal is to educate machine quilters in the latest techniques of machine quilting by offering quilting demonstrations, classes and informative lectures. Long arm, mid arm, short arm and domestic sewing machine quilters can learn and apply techniques that increase their knowledge and skill.

One of the instrumental women who helps to put this show on every year is our resident Free Motion Quilting Teacher - Kathy McCarty.  Thank you Kathy for ALL of your hard and GREAT work.

Kathy McCarty ....
An award winning quilter, she began quilting, as a hand quilter, in 1986. Her  enthusiasm for the craft produced more unfinished tops than completed ones, and she quickly turned to machine quilting to get those tops completed. With over 20 years experience, Kathy is eager to share her knowledge of machine quilting and piecing. So eager...we managed to 'snag' some of her time here at Quilts & Sew Forth amidst all the craziness that ensues when preparing for a show like QwM.
