BLOW OUT SALE
Pre-Cuts Explained
Toughest Question Challenge & Results
Dear ,
Quilt by the Fire
Summer is flying by, but you'd hardly know it by the weather we're having.  Can you believe how chilly it's been?  Perfect for Smores and cozying by the fire at night with all of our finished projects!

Here at Q&SF, with all the money we've been saving by not running the air conditioning, we've been buying like crazy-always on the lookout for the latest and greatest to share with our customers. The store is so jam-packed we're considering moving our Batiks upstairs to make room for all the shipments!  (please email us and let us know what you think of this idea).  But until that happens, we're extending our Batik Sale by offering a GREAT savings coupon (see bottom of this email) on batiks...make sure you cut it out and bring it on in!  We have 100 new batiks-including Christmas-arriving by the 24th, pushing our batik inventory over 300 bolts.

In a few short months, we've grown to be the largest Quilting & Patchwork shop in Lake County, with over 30,000 yards of fabric!  We've doubled in size since our Grand Opening in February, thanks to people like you.  You can see all of our great new lines as we update them under our NEWS section on the website.

As always, there are many new classes scheduled and they're filling up fast.  August will be a little quiet around here in the classroom, as Monique Noonan with be in California for 6 weeks to attend some great quilting retreats in the desert.  She hopes to bring back lots of new ideas and techniques to share with you.

In Monique's absence, we've scheduled some great classes with 4 of our guest teachers.  Back by popular demand, Kathy McCarty will be teaching her Machine Quilting Class.  Esther d'Abate will be showing you all how to make a Great Jelly Roll Purse  & her Fabulous Sweatshirt/Jacket.  A new teacher for us, Kay Buffington of Erie, PA, will be paving the way for Fall with a cute Harvest Machine Applique class.  Lastly, Penny Hughes will be teaching everyone's Monday night favorite-Binding 101

If you or someone you know is interested in being a guest teacher, we're always looking for new talent.  Come on in and talk to us about your class ideas.  All we'd need is a sample, a description of the class, a supply list, and a short bio for you so we can get it up on the website and scheduled for you.  It's a great way to meet people and hone your skills at the same time.  We are willing to stay open for evening classes and Tuesdays and Fridays are generally open on our schedule for guest teachers.

In September, we will be focusing on the fundamentals of various aspects of quilting.  We have  Hand Piecing, Hand Applique, and Hand Quilting classes, to mention a few.  Then we have all kinds of workshops scheduled with  some great new patterns.  Come and join our Coin Exchange workshop and create this exciting and dramatic quilt while exchanging fabric amoung your fellow classmates.  Our Stack-n-Whack class will transport you into the wonderful world of Kaleidoscope quilts with so much ease!  New for the month of September is our OPEN SEW-just come in and use our classroom to sew with friends or to make new ones.

If you don't see something you're interested in, let us know and we'll schedule something for you!  Remember, we offer evening classes on Mondays for those of you who work!  Monique has no class minimum so we NEVER cancel her classes.  Private Lessons available at VERY reasonable rates.  Lastly, if you just want to come in and sew for a good cause, join us one Friday a month for our FREE Charity Sew Class.

Don't forget, if you need help finishing a project, or you don't understand the directions on a pattern, or you just can't figure out how to finish that quilt, just come on in and Monique and the rest of the staff will try to help you.  It's best to call ahead and reserve a time, but you can always just drop in for help on anything from fabric selection to finishing your project.  It's our goal to turn our effort into your inspiration!

This month, we're going to be having a Quilting Special. Jill Milan has been so busy quilting and refining her skills, she's now quilting twice as fast and therefore has room to take in even more quilts. Customers are thrilled with the way their quilts are turning out and those stores of UFO's in your closet are (hopefully) dwindling as we help you finish them.  How great does it feel to finally finish those projects and give them as gifts or snuggle up under them?  Sure, it feels wonderful-but could it get better?
15% OFF QUILTING

Toughest Question Challenge & RESULTS

This month, our challenge was called "Toughest Question."  The purpose was to try and stump Monique with a tough question about quilting.  We promised the winner a $25.00 Gift certificate and that is exactly what we're going to give Meagan Pierson of Akron, OH (she should get the prize just for traveling so far to see us all the time!).

Keep in mind that Gift Certificates are available all the time for purchase by coming in, phone or email.  We sell them in any denomination you wish.  Call us to order yours today!

Meagan asked:
Help! I'm having trouble with fraying fabric. After I remove my fabric from the washer, it looks like a twisted, knotted rag! I trim off the tangled threads and throw the fabric in the dryer.

The fabric still frays. What a mess! How can I stop the fabric from fraying? Thanks for any suggestions that you may offer.

Monique answered:
Fraying fabric is frustrating. I've experienced this firsthand when I was a new quilter. But I learned a few tricks on how to tame those pesky threads! Here's a few of them:

1.      Wash smaller pieces of fabric by hand, or place them in a lingerie bag before you wash.

2.      Sew zig zag stitches along the raw edges.

3.     Cut a triangle (1/4" - 1/2") off each corner of your fabric.

4.     Serge the raw edges.

5.    Sew the raw edges together to form a tube.

6.    Cut the raw edges with pinking shears.

Washing & Drying Tips

Set your machine on a gentle cycle and warm water wash. As it's filling, add a small amount of detergent. I recommend Orvis or Woolite. Unfold your fabric and place it in the washer. Make sure you distribute fabric evenly.

When the wash cycle completes, remove your fabric. Unfold it (if necessary). Tumble dry on a low-heat setting until fabric is slightly damp. Remove fabric from dryer and press to remove wrinkles. You can also air dry your fabric as well.

You can control fraying fabric. And, when you do, it makes quilting a whole lot easier!

Don't forget that our next Fabric Challenge is coming to a close and the results will be posted in next months newsletter.  The winner will receive a $25.00 Gift Voucher to Q&SF.  It isn't too late to sign up - deadline is 07/31/09
