Haiti Orphanage
A child who has cholera doesn't have long.  The disease has a short incubation period from less than one day to five days.  It causes copious watery diarrhoea and vomiting, leading to severe dehydration and death.

Just £1 would pay for 30 days worth of tablets which will provide 3 weeks of clean water.  That has to be a bargain!

Project Romania
£1 would buy a days worth of postnatal vitamins badly needed for a new mother, or antibiotics for the medical centre.

Travel to court by our Legal Director who is helping families get back their identities would be covered by £1.

A child can have a hot meal for just £1, probably the only one they will receive.

Child Sponsorship
Providing a future for a child doesn't even cost a £1 a day.  This small amount doesn't just ensure that a child is fed and safe but that they have access to education and are supported by people who want to see them grow to achieve their dreams.

Join Us!

I wrote this sitting in the airport waiting to get on the next plane to Romania.  What could be more exciting?  We were heading there in order to officially launch the opening of Dobrovat House.  Yes, after six long years filled with blood, sweat, tears and laughter (when there were no more tears left) we are there!

Every one of you, our supporters, has contributed to this amazing achievement.  Over 150 children now have the opportunity to go to Summer Camp each year.  There they will sleep in a comfortable bed, wash in running water and eat three hearty meals a day.  More importantly, to the children, they will have the chance to play and have fun whilst being cared for by the Romanian team and some UK volunteers.

Bill and I had the privilege of welcoming the first group of children to the fully functioning Dobrovat House, what a party that was!  We're hoping to repeat the party atmosphere on July 13th when we welcome you to our birthday party celebrating our first year as People against Poverty.

I like to think that Bill and I make no secret of the fact we view People against Poverty as our extended family.  Over the last year we have had some hard times, and some sad times through which we have all supported each other.  It is very important to us that we now take the opportunity to celebrate together.  Come join us!

 What is £1?
A pound, a quid and for anyone brave enough to admit being old enough to remember it as such, a nicker.  One hundred pennies used to be a lot but we are all frighteningly aware of how little it buys today.  What can you get for a £1?  A newspaper (just not at weekends), a coffee (as long as you're not buying it from a well known coffee chain) and surprisingly little in the Pound Store! To us it is very little but on a global scale it is estimated that 1.5 billion people survive on less than £1 a day, for them it is an awful lot of money.

This month we want to show you how much the money you donate to us means and how much we can get with just £1.  Then quite unashamedly we're going to ask you to shake out your jean pockets, rummage around the back of the sofa and clear out under the mat in the car and give us the £1 that is hiding there.  Easy!

Dobrovat Celebrations
The opening of Dobrovat House could not have come at a better time.  For us to be able to mark our first birthday as People against Poverty with such a milestone is just fantastic.  We only have you to thank, without your support Dobrovat House would still be a dream.  We are also thankful to our partners Just a Drop and Link Romania as well as the churches and other groups that have supported us, and of course our generous donor who remains anonymous.

In a perfect world we could now say that as Dobrovat is open we don't need to raise any more funds for this project, but reality is not so easy.  Obviously there will be running costs and in the future repairs, but even before we get to that we need vital basics to make the house function, towels, toothpaste for the kids, a kettle.  If you visit our website you can click on the image of Dobrovat House and choose an item to purchase, or alternatively just make a donation and mark it Dobrovat House.

However you choose to donate just remember that Dobrovat is not just about bricks and mortar. This building is a place of joy for the children who come on camp, a refuge for the families learning to heal, a hub for the youth and church groups gathering here and most importantly a beacon to the whole community.  Dobrovat House shows that lives can be changed for the better and that the community have the means to do this for themselves.

   Stonor School Support

Following their bike ride back in May, to raise funds for the next trip by Stonar girls to Romania, Val joined the girls at their Summer Open Day on Saturday 23rd of July.  It was a great opportunity to support the school in their day and to explain to parents, friends and visitor more about about our partnership.
