Dobrovat House Appeal
July will see us celebrate our 1st birthday as People Against Poverty. Like anyone who has a birthday coming up we've been thinking about how we would like to celebrate, and for us there is only one answer.  Complete Dobrovat House!

We will be setting up a Birthday Wish List which will enable people to purchase items for Dobrovat House be that bedding, kitchen cabinets or even a kettle.

Lets make July a month to remember not just here in the UK but for the children and families who will benefit so much from this resource.

This Month We Are....
Thankful to the runners (and cheering onlookers) who supported us in the Bath Half Marathon.  They have raised in excess of £2,000 so far.  If you have been meaning to sponsor them, don't forget it's still not too late!

Thinking of Florenta in Romania.  Last month we told you of her stroke and the assistance provided by The Way of Joy team.  Florenta is now back home and receiving medication through the teams support.  What would really make the difference to Florenta's recovery is professional physiotherapy but there is just no money for this.  Currently her daughter-in-law tries her best to assist but without professional help Florenta's situation looks bleak.  If you would like to help towards the cost of physiotherapy for Florenta please call Val on 01225 718920.

Welcoming Chris da Silva as our Finance Officer.  Chris has been a supporter of PaP for some time, and we are delighted he has joined us as staff.

What motivates you?

Taking my business and building it from scratch, and then seeing it develop to be many things; we cater to the high-end food market, but are also very much still the local heart of the community.

Who do you admire in the world of business and why?

Robin Hutson who founded the Hotel du Vin chain. He came into the boutique hotel genre and really made it his own, he built up the brand and then sold it on. Also because he took the time to train all his staff really thoroughly - all staff at all levels were always well informed.

What is your business philosophy?

Treat your customers and staff well without cutting corners. Its all about effort, just because something's harder to do it doesn't mean it shouldn't be done!

What is corporate social responsibility important to your business?

I think whatever size your business and whatever field you work in, there is always room to be able to give something back. If everyone put it a little effort just to give a little back we could all make a huge difference - the whole is a sum of the parts!

What would your advice be to anyone wondering if their business can benefit from joining Business against Poverty?

They absolutely can! There is a huge already built network of likeminded people from all sorts of businesses ready to support each other as well as others.

April 17th - Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
There are a few remaining tickets for this event, book now to avoid disappointment.
We've all been there, an urgent deadline to meet, a presentation to prepare, a prospective client about to walk through the door for an online demonstration, and the IT systems go down.  Worse still, data is lot, payment, ordering and operations systems freeze and your business loses time, money and reputation.
BaP's April event will be held at the offices of technology solutions provider ITS, where members and guests will have the opportunity to pick the brains of the ITS "techies" and discuss their IT challenges and concerns.  All accompanied by a glass of wine and some nibbles, plus networking of course!
ITS is a BaP Platinum Partner and works with businesses across a broad spectrum of industries.  Their ethos is to help customers achieve goals through better use of technology and provide excellence in service delivery.  To find out more go to www.itsis.co.uk.
BaP members £10 (or FOC if bringing 2 non-member guests) / Non-members £15

A Matter of Perspective

It's always tough to motivate yourself. Monday mornings are especially tough. The working week looms and you have to shake off the weekend and gear up mind, body and soul to tackle whatever the next 5 days can throw at you.

But of course many of us are blessed with little real idea of what a challenging week can feel like. In fact, forget weekends altogether, imagine that hard lonely slog every single day - day in and day out with worry heaped upon worry and no end in sight.

Imagine how Krishna and his wife Sita are coping out in Nepal at the Starlight Childrens Home. Here they reach out to orphaned kids and offer them the chance of food, shelter and an education. The rewards are there - seeing these children emerge from the other side with a sense of themselves and a sense of purpose. Many of them going on to attend college - something unimaginable if it hadn't been for Starlight. But the issue of funding is on-going and the number of homeless kids in need of them never diminishes.

You can help Krishna and Sita - they need to pay off their loan. If they fall behind they could see Starlight close. This can not be allowed to happen. And if you fancy getting your walking boots on and getting up close and personal with Krishna's part of the world, PaP is organising a sponsored Nepal Trek in November. All proceeds go directly to Starlight.

We all face tough weeks once in a while. Krishna's is neverending. But he doesn't want to stop. Let's give him some good news to start the week with.

Have a Happy Easter.

Project Update  Starlight Children's Home

The work Krishna and his wife Sita carry out at the Starlight Children's Home is truly the stuff of dreams.  They take children, often found on the streets abandoned, nurture them, supportthem and gives them access to education.  Krishna quite literally gives these children their lives back.

Unfortunately whilst it may be the stuff of dreams the Home cannot be run on good intentions and Krishna is finding it hard to make ends meet.  If he doesn't receive an injection of funds soon he will have to close the home.  Without the Starlight Children's Home stories such as that of Roshan Pokharel's just won't be heard any longer.

When Roshan was a young boy he had a dream of becoming a pilot.  With the support of Krishna he was able to complete his school level education.  However in order to have any chance of becoming a pilot he needs to complete higher education.  Working with the team in the UK a sponsor for Roshan was found and he was able to carry on studying.
In May Roshan will sit his final GCE - A Level and he still dreams of going further and getting that pilot's licence.  None of this would have happened without the Starlight Children's Home, and there are many more children waiting for help...
... Sajina is one of those children

Sajina needs a sponsor if you are ever going to read a story about her that has a happy ending.  If you can sponsor Sajina or wish to help stop the Starlight Children's Home from closing then please click here.
Changing Lives - Nepal Trek
How would you like to take part in something that could change your life, and will definitely change the lives of others?  Nepal

We are looking for adventurous volunteers to trek in Nepal.  You will be experiencing some of the most awe inspiring views on the planet, walking amongst breathtaking scenes of the great peaks and glaciers of the Annapurna Range.

The trek will be managed by Skyline Events a company with twenty years experience and who are behind such celebrity events as the cycle ride to India (with Denise van Outen and Lydia Bright) which was recently publicised in the press.  Our trek will take place from 8th - 17th November, and if you raise enough in sponsorship you will get to take part for free!

For those of you who wish to do something amazing both for yourself and the Starlight Children's Home then pick up the phone and give us a call at the office on 01225 718920.  We will send you a full information pack and everything you need to take part in the experience of a lifetime.

 The Evolution Revolution
Office Evolution Ltd has been involved in supporting Business against Poverty (and its previous incarnation) for six years. During this time we have supported the charity on a small scale and they have been a customer of ours an ideal arrangement.

With the recent change to Business against Poverty we met again with Bill Huxley to find out what the charity now does. It really struck a chord with us and Bill's passion for what the charity does really came across.  It was clear to us that a small change in what we do could make a big change in the life of someone somewhere else, Yes, they may well be people that we have never met but does that really matter? Just the knowledge that you will change someone's life was enough for us.

So we closed our meeting with Bill with a commitment to build a sanctuary home from our business profits in 2012. We have the support of BaP and they have committed to promote our business to other BaP members to help us reach our target. A win-win situation for all involved and we look forward to reporting on "our" sanctuary house construction.

Is your business looking for a team building opportunity?  What better way then participating in our Nepal Trek, whether that be by entering a team or supporting an individual by using the fundraising as an opportunity to bring your staff and colleagues closer.

It is widely recognised that businesses benefit from having individuals who have a wide variety of life experiences.  Entering our Nepal Trek could widen not only an individuals horizons but your business as well.  Add to this the difference it will make to the Starlight Children's Home and that has to be a win, win, win!

The trek will take place from November 8th to 17th and if enough sponsorship money is raised the entrant goes for free!  If you want to learn more please call the office on 01225 718920.
