Way Of Joy A thank you from Valentin at the Way Of Joy for the assistance you provided with the heating system.

Dear Val, Thank you and all the people from PaP who are working so hard to help us continue the work with people at Way Of Joy.

With your great help, we immediately started to do repairs so that the canteen and medical centre can keep going.  We have started changing all pipes from the most important areas of the building and make new connections that will heat all the building!
 plumbing at WOJ
Thank you very much for your great response and financial help that help us to solve the problem!  Hopefully at the end of this week we will be able to put the new boiler in.

God Bless
Valentin
Dobrovat House
We would love to be able to complete the house in time for People against Poverty's 1st birthday in July.  Wouldn't that make those celebrations special!

Something Exotic...
Here at People against Poverty HQ we've been planning something exotic.  A once in a life time opportunity that could change your life and will certainly change the lives of others.

What is it?  You will have to wait until next month to find out but here is a little taster.

This Month We Are....
Thankful for our supporters who donated an amazing £2772.49 to our Way of Joy heating appeal.

Thinking of those running in the Bath Half on March 11th  to support us.  Don't forget John Matthews of ITS (a platinum BaP member) has generously said they will match whatever the team raise.  You can make a donation to the team via their my donate page or come along and provide moral support!

Welcoming Jenny James again! Last month we told you Jenny had joined us temporarily.  We are delighted to say she has now agreed to join the team on a permanent basis.

Meet the People!

Who exactly are the People who support People against Poverty? This month we meet one of our volunteers.
Jon G
Jon Gillam is a recent graduate from the University of Bristol who has joined us as Volunteer Child Sponsorship Coordinator.

He has already proved himself to be a real team player, reliable and able to come up with great ideas under pressure.  Talents well suited to working with People against Poverty!

With a passion for politics and current affairs it is unsurprising that Jon has an M.Sc. in International Relations. His interest in closing the gap between politics, the public and business means he is keen to pursue a career with corporations on issues of corporate social responsibility.

When he isn't job hunting or volunteering Jon likes to indulge his passion for sport and should it all go wrong he's the perfect man to play referee!
It's cold outside!

A very good morning to you!  We hope you are enjoying our new look newsletter and it is enabling you to fully understand exactly how our communities are working together in relieving poverty.  We would welcome any feedback you may have.

I hope you managed to stay warm through the coldest February since 1986.  What a contrast we experience in our beautiful country!  We experienced lows of -10 in some areas whilst hitting a high of 19 degrees in others.  We may have thought it got cold but in Romania temperatures plummeted to -28 with snow as deep as 12 feet in some areas.  That makes our 'extreme' weather seem rather mild!  The weather has resulted in many struggles for those we work with.  You can read about these in our project update which this month focuses on Romania.

I would like to thank you all for you continued support which comes in many ways.  One way you can really help is in spreading news of our work.  We ask that if you know of any family, friends or colleagues who you think would be interested in our work, or perhaps becoming a child sponsor, that you pass on this newsletter.  Just a few clicks could make all the difference!

Thank you

Project Update
Way of Joy - Romania
For seven years Florenta has been living in a makeshift concrete out block, under the railway station.  Sharing her home with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren there are 9 of them crammed into a small space trying to care for each other in the direst of circumstances.

Florenta's Home 2

Just as the extreme weather hit Valentin and Raul, from Way of Joy, received news that Florenta had experienced a stroke but reaching her in 12 foot deep snow was impossible for 2 weeks.

When they finally made it through she was lying on her bed, unable to do anything for herself, being cared for by her family.  Realising the situation was critical her son-in-law gently carried her in his arms to the waiting minibus where they embarked on a terrifying drive through the snow to the hospital.

In Romania help comes at a cost, in this case £100.  It may not sound a lot but the Project team did not have it.  They called the UK and funds for medication were released to them.  Who knows what would have happened if they did not have this option available.

The money for Florenta's medication came out of the General Fund.  Without this there would be no safety net for our Projects in times of crisis.  Last month when the heating system at the Way of Joy packed in there was not sufficient money in the General Fund to fix it. You donated a total of £2772.49 for us to resolve the problem for which the team in the UK and Romania thank you.

Work at the Way of Joy is well under way with radiators and piping being laid.  However until everything defrosts the boiler cannot be installed.  The team, undeterred, have installed temporary heating which means the centre is open once more.  The medical centre is functioning and whilst it is too cold for the children to stay there to eat the canteen has been preparing take out meals for them.  Without your generosity this would not have been possible, and we would be hearing of more stories like that of Florenta.

Dobrovat House Appeal
We started Dobrovat House in 2006 and over the last 5 years you have raised a phenomenal £75,000.  Despite donations diminishing we have been able to continue meeting our build commitments, however we desperately need to raise £9,000 to install the sewage system and complete the house.  In February we received a donation of £1000 to start us off but need your help to reach our target.

Unfazed by the house being finished the team in Romania have been utilising it in the summer months for the children's camp. However without water the kids cannot stay overnight and cooking is an outdoor event.

Once finished it will provide space for families to stay and spend time as a family.  Poverty is not just about material deprivation and by providing counselling and family support we furnish people with another set of tools with which to help themselves.

In addition to family work the house will be used for various youth and community groups.  It will also be a base for the Awareness and Educational trips.  All of this will mean that it can become a self sufficient enterprise and hub for the community.

John Matthews MD of ITS, a Platinum member, had this to say.
"We wanted to contribute to a charity where we could see directly where our money was going and with Busienss against Poverty this was absolutely the case.... as MD I have had many conversations with staff over what BaP are achieving, which created an internal 'feel good factor'!"

If you have already "dipped a toe in the water" as a sole treader or SME member, why not consider upgrading to silver, gold or platinum membership, details of which can be found here.

Time to Say Goodbye
Mine may not be a name or face many of you recognise, but it was a little over a year ago that I joined People against Poverty as Finance Officer. It didn't take me long to realise I had to fill very large shoes left behind by my two predecessors, Diana and Kirsten!

I faced an incredibly steep learning curve, but as each month passed it was a little easier than the month before. I soon began to recognise the names of so many of our very loyal supporters as well as the children and projects they support. So, it is with mixed emotions that I am now leaving People against Poverty.

I am going to miss my office space and the satisfaction of having the bank account reconciled! But, a change in my husband's work circumstances was the 'clincher' in my decision to spend more time at home, with our two children, while also enrolling in another part-time book keeping course.

I am sure God has amazing things planned for the Charity, and I look forward to watching Him reach many more people through the work of People against Poverty.
