PEOPLE AGAINST POVERTY
December 2011 |
|
|
Greetings!
Merry Christmas! Both the staff and Trustees thank you for your contribution and commitment to our work over the past twelve months. This year we have been supported by individuals, child sponsors, business people, schools and those within the music and arts sector. All have contributed to making life easier for so many during 2011 and go to prove that the desire to help the vulnerable and needy crosses all social boundaries. This year when you sit down with your loved ones to celebrate Christmas we want you to remember that you are also part of a larger family; People Against Poverty.
Working with the families and children in our projects we have been able to ease their poverty through the provision of basic needs. Your support has enabled us to put food on their tables, provide new Sanctuary homes for those in the direst of need and support Project Leaders in their day to day work helping people out of poverty. Without you none of this could have been achieved. For more details of how your support has helped please read on.

We are all very aware that trading conditions are tough and that the economy in the UK and abroad is far from certain. What many are not always aware of is that Charities are not exempt from this. We are working harder for every penny that we raise, and ensuring it is spent as smartly as it possibly can be. Our commitment to the people we support in Romania, Haiti and Nepal remains as strong as ever. These people live in extreme poverty and in times of economic crisis they are more vulnerable than ever.
In order to ensure we meet our commitments People against Poverty has taken a long hard look at our own costs. As a result we have taken appropriate measures such as reduced staffing and salaries, renegotiated hours with our staff and reviewed office running costs. As a result of this from 1st December, we moved our offices in Trowbridge to Grangeside Business Centre. This move will give us the flexibility to scale up or down as the year progresses, hire meeting rooms as required and in addition support one of our stalwart Business Against Poverty members. The savings we will make by implementing the changes above ensure security in our forward running costs without impacting any of our projects.

Each month we disburse approximately £9000 to support the children and families in our countries of operation. Unfortunately some of our supporters are suffering through job losses, salary reductions and other factors. As a result they are having to either reduce or cease their giving altogether. We recognise that this is not an easy decision for anyone and thank them for the contributions they have provided, we hope that they will continue to support us either through practical means or their prayers.
In order to plug the shortfall, and continue to grow the projects, we are asking those who are able to consider the following:
- Do you know anyone else who would like to be involved with People against Poverty either personally through child sponsorship or through their business as a member of Business against Poverty?
- Would you consider a small extra monthly donation? Just £5 provides one child with the opportunity to eat a hot, healthy meal in a canteen for 3 days a month.
With the imminent arrival of the winter months, particularly in Romania, our work is more critical than ever. Please help us to provide for these children and families who really do depend on us for survival.
CHRISTMAS CARDS
With the help of some of the children on our child sponsorship programme in Romania, Nepal and Haiti we have designed a Christmas card. The perfect choice for you to send to your friends and family. Or if you are a Business against Poverty member can you think of a better card to send to your clients and suppliers?

Each card contains a small bible verse and is extremely colourful. At £3.00 for a pack of 5 or £5.00 for a pack of 10 (P&P is £1.20 per pack plus 30p each additional pack) they are great value for money. Size A5, Quality 300gm silk coated, Pack of 5 cards £3.00 or pack of 10 Cards £5.00. P&P is charged at £1.20 per pack of 10 plus 30p per additional pack. We have already placed a second order for these cards, so dont miss out.
CHRISTMAS HAMPERS
Christmas for the people we work with means nothing when you have nothing. No gifts for the children, no fruit for stockings and no food for the table. Would you consider feeding a family over the christmas period. We are sending out funds to purchase enough food to feed a large family a hearty and nourishing meal. Each hamper costs £25.00 and contains enough food to feed an entire family of up to 12 people.
Your gift will be provided as one of the child sponsorship Christmas Cards above, with the following greeting printed inside:
My gift to you this year is a FOOD HAMPER which will give a family living
in extreme poverty in (Country) a special Christmas meal.
You can purchase these hampers for either Nepal, Haiti or Romania. Call us now to ensure you receive your gift in time to give out at Christmas. 01225 718920

SANCTUARY HOMES
We are excited to have seen 3 more families move into their new Sanctuary Homes in Iasi this year. Our Director of Education Against Poverty, Jon Williams, used his expertise to show youngsters the art of building a home, constructed of wood, from scratch. Not only are the lives of those receiving the homes changed considerably, but also the lives of the young people who built them. They experience poverty first hand, at its deepest level, a real contrast to their day to day living. We work with schools, at all levels, to aid and encourage the development of social education bringing meaning and purpose to young individuals that will shape their lives.
I have had the privilege of recently visiting Roxanne's new home, 2 weeks after her moving in. It was a delight to enter a room that was warm from the stove that had been fitted, and lit from the Solar Panel. Roxanne was pariicularly excited to show us her "electricity"! Now the family can be assured that during the extremely cold winter months, often -30 degrees, they will be warm, cosy and safe.
The families now have a home that is worth about £8,000. When you take into consideration the planning, the manpower, the £2,000 to build the home and the overhead costs this is a real handup for a family in starting to relieve them from their poverty. |
DOBROVAT HOUSE
Our dream this year was to raise the £28,000 needed to complete the Dobrovat House project. Through the generosity of so many we are over two-thirds of the way there, but we still need a further £9,000 before we can complete the works required. We and the project team remain positive through faith and prayer, despite the harsh economic climate, that we will complete the house very soon. The benefits that it will bring to the families and children we work with are impossible to put a price on. For example adults will be able to access counselling services and programs to assist parents in caring for their families. Over 200 children will enjoy a camp holiday each year, something none of them could possibly dream of before now. It is a chance for them to be children, enjoy the freedom of play and learn about the countryside environment. At night they will sleep in a comfortable bed, one they don't have to share with siblings, parents or even grandparents.
These activities are not all that is planned, just a selection, so you can understand why we are so keen to raise the final £9,000. However assistance doesn't always need to come in the form of cash if you have contacts in any of the following areas we would love to hear from you; kitchen suppliers and fitters, bedding stores, soft furnishing. LEGAL, MEDICAL AND CANTEEN PROJECTS
Access to hot food, basic healthcare and an identity are basic needs which we are committed to supplying. Through the care and expertise of the Project Team 6,000 hot meals have been provided this year. The medical centre has attended to children giving access not just to basic healthcare but vital childhood vaccinations. In addition the Legal Project has helped in providing many people with new birth certificates and identity papers unlocking their ability to access support.
Donations for these projects is essential so that we can continue to feed, educate and provide for the children's basic needs. If you feel you can contribute to the General Fund enabling us to distribute the money where most needed, then please click here for further details.
AWARENESS TRIPS & CHILD SPONSORSHIP
This year we have introduced Supporters, Ambassadors, and Donors to our Awareness trips. Along with the general 5 day Awareness trip, Ambassadors Connie and Nathan Lucas and Dr Andrew Knight were able to spend 2 weeks at Camp with the children, providing necessary care and help to the hundreds that were able to attend through the child sponsorship programme.
Being part of these trips makes it "real" for those who support the work and especially for those who sponsor a child. Meeting with her sponsored child for the first time Angela Sherwood, our Office Manager, was able to describe that meeting.
"Meeting Monica was very moving. She is a beautiful child and very shy. It was a real pleasure to be able to give her homemade cards from my 2 daughters and small gifts for Christmas to her and her family. It was so lovely to find out that her interests were exactly the same as my daughters, being painting and reading. It was great to see firsthand the difference that child sponsorship makes to these children living in desperate conditions - I would encourage anyone to do this. It is particularly good for families to be able to share this experience particularly when we live in the consumer age we live in."
Child sponsorship still continues in six countries although the projects where we actively promote the scheme are in Romania, Nepal and Haiti. The difference that you are making in helping these children receive the basic necessities is life changing for them. For every child sponsorsed means another child is lifted very gently from its poverty. Its only us that can help these unfortunate youngsters, so please get involved.
