BBC 2009 Wrap-up
The Bahamas Billfish Championship's 2009 season will not go down in the record books for the number of fish caught or the greatest number of participating teams. It will be remembered; however, as a very successful tournament season during some trying economics times. The season's fishing was highlighted by the outcome of the Cape Eleuthera Championship. Of the 96 blue marlin caught throughout BBC 2009, 38 were caught during the Cape Eleuthera leg by a fleet of twenty-six boats.
In all, 160 qualified billfish were caught during the five legs of this year's BBC; ninety-six blue marlin, thirty-eight white marlin and twenty-six sailfish. The BBC continues to validate all catches using time and date stamped digital images. Affidavits signed by all participants fishing on each team further confirm that the fish was released in accordance with IGFA and Bahamas Billfish Championship rules.

Looking Ahead to BBC 2010
While the winners of this year's Bahamas Billfish Championship were still celebrating their victory, the Steering Committee had already begun planning for the Championship's 37th season.
Revisions to the tournament schedule and changes to the BBC's angling rules were items before the BBC Steering Committee when they met during the Treasure Cay Championship. The BBC's 2010 tournament circuit was put together to minimize travel between tournaments while still expanding the Championship's reach. Additionally, changing the fishing days to Thursday, Friday and Saturday allows the businessmen and professionals that fish the Series an opportunity to have at least two days in the office before heading to the tournaments for Wednesday's registration. Let's Hear It for Our Sponsors
A great deal of the Bahamas Billfish Championship's success over the past 36 years is the direct result of the long term relationship the Series maintains with its sponsors. For many of these sponsors the association spans more than twenty-five years. It is only through the ongoing support of these companies that the BBC is able to keep entry fees for the individual tournaments to a minimum while continuing to provide first-class venues for these events. Competitive sports worldwide have been affected by the global economy; whether it be a cut-back in advertising or reduced sponsorship involvement. While the BBC has not been immune to decreases in sponsor participation, we are extremely thankful for the sustaining sponsor involvement with this year's Series.
We encourage all BBC anglers and crewmembers to show your appreciation to our sponsors by directing your business in their direction. For a complete listing, by category, of all BBC sponsors for 2009 and a breakdown of each company's contribution to making the BBC 2009 a success click here ...

Hurricanes
You Can Run But You Cannot Hide
By Capt. Skip Smith
When you hear of an approaching storm and turn on the TV, the weatherman has the 5-day forecast pointed right at South Florida, even though the storm's path shows it going due west and should go into Mexico. Sometimes you think they work for Tums, Mylanta or some other drug company. Your stomach hurts and you start to think of all the work ahead of you to prepare for the storm. Let's see, your home owners wind policy has a $100,000 deductible and the boat policy has about the same, so that means you're in for a lot of work so you don't have to pay out that much money. Maybe you can try call the boat yard and ask about a bottom job. I hear that one a lot. When you do call, they are all full! Hurricane storage isn't cheap and some boat yards offer a hurricane storage plan. Usually they want you to pay for this contract which equates to three or four month's worth of storage. Underwriters and their claims department would love all of their insured's to either hire a Captain or have the owner/operator to run from the storm. I guess they don't watch the channels we watch, as the National Hurricane Centers cone covers all of Florida from five days out and it's impossible to outrun something that nobody knows where it's going. Dolphinfish Research Newsletter
Tag recovery reports have poured in during the first half of 2009. A total of 41 tags have been reported recovered so far this year compared to 27 reported for all of 2008. Only during 2007, when 73 tags were reported for the full year, were more tag recoveries reported in the first half of the year. Tag recoveries are largely a direct function of the number of fish tagged. The record-setting year of 2007 saw 73 tags reported when more than 2,400 fish were marked and released. In 2008, with almost 1,400 dolphin tagged, 27 tags were reported. The first half of 2009 has had 900 fish reported tagged and an amazing 41 tags reported recovered.

Greetings!
The 36th edition of the Bahamas Billfish Championship is in the history books. Right now, many of our participating teams are fishing tournaments in St. Thomas, Bermuda, the Gulf of Mexico and spread out along the East Coast of the U.S. The competitive spirit that resides in our anglers and crew is what makes each year's BBC exciting.
The electronic versions of The Teaser and the new BBC e-Update have been extremely well received by the anglers, the crew and those that just have an interest in the BBC. In particular, those anglers and crew mentioned above that are far removed from the US Postal Service certainly appreciate the convenience of email delivery.
This issue of The Teaser is full of good, timely information. There are links to page after page of tournament photos and you can order a DVD that is a compilation of all five tournaments.
I hope you enjoy the read. For me, it is time to go fishing!
Have a Great Summer & Tight Lines,
Al Behrendt Bahamas Billfish Championship | |
