Dearest Yogis and Yoginis,
Spring is slowly becoming more and more of a reality. Soon we'll have more warmer days than cooler. We'll start eating dinner at 8pm, thinking it is 6pm. Waking up in the morning will be easy because the sun will be shining.  Many of us at The SweatBox celebrated May Day witnessing the marriage of our beloved teacher Suzanne (shown below rocking half-moon pose in her wedding gown).

During the service, the priest presented the congregation with a few biblical riddles. One of them was, "How do you make God laugh?" I heard a few responses from the pews around us, "Smile." "Be happy." "Tell a good joke." Ultimately though, when no one came up with the right answer, Father Hoang told us. "Tell him your plan". I could see all around me thoughtful expressions. It took us all a moment to make sense of the response. It's just like our yoga practice. There is no plan. Every day is different. Not having "a plan" might feel scary and uncertain at first. It is new, unfamiliar. Try it. See what happens if you just stay in the moment, give up the plan and relish in the here and now while your plan unfolds.

Namaste,
Laura and Frankie

maureen mcgregorCelebrating One Year of Bikram Yoga Practice
By Maureen MacGregor

I thought sharing my testimony would be a perfect time to reflect on the last year of my Bikram yoga experience since I just celebrated my first year anniversary of practicing Bikram yoga in the middle of March! I first heard of Bikram yoga from my friend Cody who touted Bikram yoga since the day I met her. Finally, years later, I gave in when I decided that other sports just weren't as fun on my injured knees. Unable to see a doctor on my student's budget with no health insurance, Bikram yoga keeps me walking without pain, but it does so much more than just that. About 6 months ago I moved from Boulder to Seattle to study Environment & Community at Antioch University.

After establishing a strong Bikram yoga community in Boulder , I made sure to move close to a studio as to continue my practice which led me to Capitol Hill and to The SweatBox. The move has proven to be challenging on my practice, as most changes are. In the midst of these challenges my practice has taught me that I can always change my mind - even if I can't change the heat, or the people around me, I can always choose to change my perspective. As are the postures in the series, this is easier said than done. I still find myself giving up, tricking myself into believing that I can't do something and that I'll never be able to do a posture correctly. Lately I have been focusing on letting go of these thoughts, to be more patient, give into the moment and breathe. I'm finally able understand that it's supposed to hurt -- that means you're doing it right-- and if you are trying 100% you're getting all the benefits, its not about comparing yourself to others.

Even after only a year of practice I have already felt immense physical, psychological and spiritual benefits from my practice and I can't wait to reflect on 5...10 years, I'm hooked! If you're not, stick with it. If you feel insecure with your practice, just thank yourself for committing to an hour and a half of killing yourself. Most importantly, KEEP COMING BACK, hope to see you in class!

Maureen can be found practicing at the Capitol Hill studio.

              KERMIE                                               CLEM and OLIVE                              PETUNIA

In April, The SweatBox raised money for Doctors without Borders and the Ingraham Cooperative Preschool. Help us support the animals in out community in June.
The SweatBox teachers will tag-team teach a class to raise funds for the Homeless Animal Fund at Rainier Veterinary Hospital (Where our dear teacher Kristen moonlights with her true love- animals).
Come make a contribution or practice on your regular package.
Rainier Veterinary Hospital has been in it's present location on Rainier Avenue South since the 1930's.  Many of you know Dr. Heino, a legend in the veterinary community, who began working at the clinic in 1959 as a kennel assistant.  50 years later he's still here!  Dr. Kung bought the practice in 2008 and continues to serve the community, caring for animals who are stray, surrendered or otherwise abandoned through the Homeless Animal Fund.  This fund covers surgeries, vaccinations, medications and food. We find homes for these creatures through a network of volunteers, family and friends.  Petunia was left in a box by the dumpster and is now enjoying suburban life in Kenmore. Clem and Olive, siblings, lived at the clinic for nearly a year before going home with teacher Lene. Kermie was found in an alley at 4 weeks of age, eyes shut tight with infection, and is now a robust youngster living with teacher Kristen.

We'd love to see you.
