LOGO FOR NEWLETTER

laura in bowHappy February Yogis and Yoginis,

Now into our second month of a new decade, things seem to be speeding up and slowing down at once. Many of you have recommitted to your practice. It has been thrilling to be both teachers and students among you in the yoga rooms filled with new energy and strength.

Welcome to all of the new students who have bravely entered the world of Bikram Yoga and challenged yourselves in ways you never imagined. For all of you veterans, relish in the opportunity to reflect on how far you have travelled in your own yoga practice as you observe the first-timers struggling and  stretching. And, for you brand-new-beginners, feel comforted by those around you who make it look easy (we know it isn't). Soon you will be there too with your own practice.

What is important to remember in all of our yoga practices is that, no matter how it looks, easy or difficult, it is always a struggle. This struggle is what takes us to new depths. This month, think about what your practice is and what you want it to be. It is certainly the act of committing to practicing daily, weekly, monthly.... But it is so much more. Your practice is everywhere inside and outside of the yoga room. Deciding to resist wiping your eyes after Padahastasana. Choosing to stay in your final Savasana for an extra five minutes. Focusing on yourself even when a student across the room is distracting. All of these actions, when "practiced" become our practice. Start small. Choose something that you want to make part of your practice and start there. See what happens. Soon you can go wider into your world. What you eat, when you drive, how you talk to your partner or your children. It is all a practice.

Thanks to everyone who supported the Food Lifeline food drive on January 23rd and to Kristen for teaching our Haiti Relief classes on Friday the 22nd and 29th and all of you who supported that effort. We raised an incredible $1600 plus. We will continue to support our communities near and far as much as we can and we are so thankful to you all for helping us do that.

Namaste,

Laura and Frankie

KIDS CLASSES COMING THIS SPRING

Do your kids ask what you do at "YOGA"? Now they'll have a chance to experience yoga for themselves. Drop your 5-8 year old child off and go get a coffee or have a walk. In a normal-heated room, your kids will learn some very general yoga philosophy, practice yoga postures, and play yoga-inspired games. Capitol Hill classes will be taught by Laura and Shoreline classes by Frankie.

melodyBikram Yoga and Change
By Melody Price

When I first started practicing Bikram yoga a little over a year ago, I remember laughing out loud in half moon pose while my body shook uncontrollably, thinking, "Seriously, people actually pay to do this? They must be insane!" Little did I know that in the following minutes my life would be changed forever.

Before beginning my practice I was working in a job that was stressful, time consuming, unfulfilling and unhealthy.  I was mentally stuck and felt like I was watching my life drift by and I wasn't sure how to change it.

Then came my first yoga class. Aside from the brief moment of laughter it was a pretty intense experience, and I was exhausted. But that night I slept so well and in the morning I felt rested for the first time in years.  Officially I was hooked and began practicing 2-3 times a week.

Within weeks my body began to change and my mind followed. I realized that the studio was a microcosm of life outside.  Some days were a struggle and some days were a breeze, but I found that if I just got myself to class, just got to my mat, no matter what sort of life I had that day, I would always find something different when I left.

My developing practice had given me the space to be still so that I could confront anything outside with strength and courage.

Within four months of practicing regularly not only was I more flexible, but I started to believe in myself again.  I began to think of ways I could improve my life beyond yoga and began actively pursuing things that I knew would be fulfilling. I reduced my hours at work and began working tirelessly on launching an all natural dog treat line. It was amazing, the more energy I put into my practice and business, the more energy I had. I began setting goals for myself in and outside of class. Today I will breath easier in half moon, check.  Today I will research compostable packaging for dog treats, check.  Tomorrow I will lock my knee, check.  Tomorrow I will apply for a permit at the Pike Place Market, check.  Sometime soon I will touch my forehead to the floor, and sometime soon I will be working for myself full time.

My yoga practice has given me the space to create solutions within my own life. Bikram Yoga has not only changed my life, it has changed my future.

In December I was accepted into the Pike Place Market as a vendor and as of April 1st I will be officially working for myself full time, hopefully to be accompanied by touching my forehead to the floor.

I have the SweatBox and my Bikram yoga practice to thank for the inspiration. I will be forever grateful.

You can find Melody practicing at the Shoreline studio throughout the week, and at the Pike Place Market selling her dog treats and at AdventureDaysTreats.com

If you have a personal story to share, please email Laura.

THE SPRING 30-DAY CHALLENGE... March 1st

Practice every day for 30 days.

Here's what people said about October's 30-Day Challenge:

"As the days of the challenge went by, the wall--the unknown--dissipated and seems to have left in its place a fearlessness I have not previously experienced.  I know this sounds rather dramatic, but this last month has been the most amazing experience."       -- Keetje, Age 55

"I have a renewed faith in myself and what I can achieve after completing the 30-Day challenge.  Physically I am stronger and my practice has improved tremendously.  I now go deeply into the postures that I struggled with in the beginning."-- Judy, Age 41

Get ready. Gear up. Just do it. Look for sign up sheets at both studios starting mid-February.
