Laura and Frankie Head Shot ColorHappy New Year Yogis and Yoginis,

Welcome to a new year. A new beginning.
Every new year, some of us make resolutions, some of us don't. Some of us keep our resolutions, some of us don't. That's because resolutions are hard. Usually they are BIG and often overwhelming. Practicing yoga is a chance to start over everyday, making the resolution to do your best from the first breath of Pranayama to your final Savasana.

Bikram says, "Yoga makes you You." Some of you have heard instructors relay this statement during class. For me, this simple phrase signifies something very basic and also incredibly profound. Yoga makes you you because you bring yourself to your mat and give your best effort and it is you and no one else who can do this. You are your Yoga.
Yoga, and the regular practice of it, takes us to a deeper place where we get to know a different part of ourselves. This process of discovery changes us so that we feel different, like a new person. We arrive at a place that is more integrated physically and mentally, "A new you."

Sometimes this process of discovery is difficult. Our bodies balk at the idea of practicing EVERY DAY. We are tired. It gets dark at 4:30pm. Our joints are cold. And then you tell your body, "I need this." And you practice and you feel (every single time) better after having practiced. Your joints don't hurt as much. You have more energy. It's not such a big deal that the sky is dark when you wake up and when you leave work.

For us at The SweatBox, another year means that we get to be a part of this amazing community. We get to keep teaching Yoga and practicing Yoga. We welcome new teachers and students and bid others farewell as they move on to new adventures and journeys.
Yoga is powerful. It can heal our bodies and the world. It is through your energy, your commitment, your practice that this power exists. For this, we thank you.

Namaste,
Laura and Frankie

Bikram Yoga and Healing
By Anthony Lewis

My journey in Hatha yoga through the Bikram method has been one of discovery, healing, and ultimately an awakening of awareness to the ancient intelligence of the human body. I have been a Bikram practitioner since 2003 and have had the great fortune to practice with some amazing people and teachers.

A couple years ago I was in a pretty bad cycling accident that fractured my right clavicle in two places. Once the initial shock of the trauma wore off and I tried to move my right arm, I found myself in excruciating pain. As soon as they got me on the gurney and placed in the back of the ambulance I instinctively assumed Savasana and started following my breath. I fixed my gaze on a spot on the ceiling and just breathed into it. A little while into my ride, the EMT attending my vitals said,  "In all my experience as an EMT, I have never seen anyone who suffer such a serious trauma manage to keep such a low heart rate and blood pressure."  Not wanting to disturb my little peaceful bubble too much I just said one word, "Yoga."

Some time later after I had the bone surgery to put Humpty Dumpty back together again I found myself in physical therapy. I had lost a lot of strength and I had not yet tried to test the limits of my range of motion. My physical therapist is a very seasoned and popular doctor who routinely works with professional athletes. I was blown away by his posture and apparent sense of body awareness. He moved like a Yogi! Shortly into my first prescribed therapy session he tested my range of motion and did some resistance testing as well. Once again I had managed to baffle a professional in the medical community with my miraculous Yoga body. He had never seen anyone with this particular injury, which is quite common in the cycling community, who had retained or recovered a complete range of motion so soon after the surgery.

In the early 1980's there was a TV show I watched as a kid where an everyday guy is visited by aliens and they give him a super suit. This suit came with a set of instructions which he promptly lost. He then spent the rest of the series bumbling around trying to figure out how to use it properly. The human body is that suit, and like the main character in that show for the most of us we have also lost the instructions for the right and proper use of it. Through our shared practice of Bikram yoga we slowly learn how to use it, and we also find that our body is the instruction manual that we lost.  By finding our self and learning to listen to it we find that it is ancient, intelligent and it knows exactly what it needs.

All you need in life is Love and a locked knee.

The SweatBox in the Community

 La Gloria Orphanage
Last year we had 1000 SweatBox tote bags printed for our studios. Unfortunately, the first round came out fuscia and, while we love the color, it's not "our color." So, we decided that, even though this bags are recyclable, it would be fun to put them to use, give them to folks who need them. Beth, our general manager, found a great place for our bags in Mexico......

Hogar Infantil La Gloria is an orphanage located about 13 miles south of the U.S./Mexican border. It is the full time home for about 50 children, who have been abandoned or removed from their families for a variety of reasons  by the Mexican Social Service Agency, DIF. We are dedicated to providing for all of their physical, spiritual, and emotional needs.

La Gloria's mission is to give each child in a secure home and loving family in which to develop and grow.
Along with presents that came from many other individuals and organziations, Phillp Gonzalez of the Department of Social and Health Services, personally drove The SweatBox bags to San Diego where they were transferred onto a truck and taken into the La Gloria Orphanage Mexico.  In 2009, La Gloria Orphanage expanded their educational and enrichment programming and placed over sixty children in need of a loving home.
