Happy Winter Yogis and Yoginis,
Every December I get this familiar feeling. I struggle to catch my breath. It seems like normal life ceases at Halloween and doesn't resume again until after the new year. If you share this feeling, pause, close your eyes, and take a breath. Then, pack your bag and get to yoga.
Holidays are a time to celebrate, rejoice, and reconnect. Holidays can also be draining physically and emotionally. Last week when my [Laura's] daughter was absolutely fried from parties and sugar and holiday BUZZ, she asked me to turn on her "yoga music." She got her mat out of the closet, rolled it out in the living room and asked me to do yoga with her. A half hour later she and I were both ten times more calm and clear-headed. At any age,in any season, Yoga grounds us. For this reason, The SweatBox always offers classes on holidays. There is no better place to renourish yourself than on your mat.
In 2010, we plan to offer more of the same great teaching. You can take advantage of three different holiday packages through December. For new students we now have a 10-day special (10 days of consecutive yoga for $10). We're doing a Teen Girls Class at Shoreline in January and plan to offer a monthly kids class at both Shoreline and Capitol Hill in 2010.
You all continue to provide the inspiration that motivates all of us at The SweatBox. Tomorrow is a new moon, the first one before the Winter Solstice. This is a great time to pause and think about what you hope for yourself in the new year. Set your intentions for your work, your health, your family, and your yoga practice.
Thank you for being a part of The SweatBox community. Peace to you and yours this holiday season.

TEEN GIRLS YOGA CLASS at SHORELINE
This winter, The SweatBox is offering a special class for teen girls (12-17. The classes will held Sundays from 1:-00-2:30 January 3 through January 31st.
Class cost: $55.00 Pre-registration is required Students can register at the Shoreline studio in person or call 206.546.4900
Yoga is a great practice for teen girls. For many young women, practicing yoga is the first time they experience their own body strength. The essential tools of controlling the body and mind that come from regular yoga practice help to improve self-esteem, body-image, energy and productivity. Yoga also relieves stress and helps with hormone imbalances. Please let us know if you want us to send a flyer to your high school or community group.

The SweatBox in Your Community
This month The SweatBox thanks those of you who supported Yogafrica at The Capitol Hill Artwalk. YogAfrica was established to help fund the OSU Children's Home in Accra, Ghana. The orphanage has approximately 200 orphans ages infant to 18.Kary Doerfler, the director, is a Delta Airline flight attendant who, while travelling to Ghana, became involved with the facility. She and her family have been helping the orphanage for two years. To further improve their lives, Kary created a line of yoga products made by Ghanian single mothers to provide another income source to support the Orphanage. The yoga bags are made from recycled fabrics for lining and 100% sustainable cotton. YogAfrica products are available at Whole Foods (Roosevelt and South Lake Union locations.)
THANK YOU! Thank you to Fumiko Medford, Artist for debuting your work. Fumiko's art is available at The SweatBox Capitol Hill through December.
Thanks to Tonic for bringing yoga wear and offering great deals.

Welcome Your New Teacher Gary
Gary Smith
After seeing my wife Lisa come home from Bikram yoga 4 and some years ago, completely drenched in sweat and exhausted, I thought "OK .... I can do this." During my first class (with Frankie), I crawled out the door halfway through. She dragged me back in and I never left. This Yoga saved my life. I have had asthma from a young age and I have constantly been fighting pneumonia and lung infections. I no longer even need my inhaler. Score. Now I have the honor and privilege of teaching this healing yoga to others. Double Score. I graduated from Bikram's Yoga College of India Winter of 2009.
Gary can be found teaching and practicing and teaching at Capitol Hill and Shoreline.

The SweatBox or The Gym? You Decide
By Matt Cone
A few years ago, a friend of mine said to me "You should start doing Yoga, it is like making a deposit into your 401K Health Account, going to the gym is a withdrawal." I had been an avid gym rat most of my life. I have always felt the need to break a sweat, mostly to make up for the food I had eaten and the drinks I had consumed. The cardio conditioning helped with my favorite sport of lacrosse, but I always felt sore. Getting out of bed after a game, or most mornings for that fact simply hurt.
I can safely say that after 3 years of pretty regular attendance at the SweatBox, I am hooked. I have dropped my gym membership and focused solely on Bikram. The results have been great. Last week, I went skiing for the first time of the season with a number of my younger lacrosse buddies. I out skied them by far, they stopped around 1pm due to soreness. In the next day emails floating around about the day, I was able to say that yoga was the reason I wasn't sore like the rest of them. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them at the studio soon. You can find Matt practicing often at Capitol Hill. If you have a story to share, please email Laura. |
