Dear Yogis and Yoginis,
Fall is here. Really here. It is great to see many of you falling onto your mat for the 30-day challenge. Taking on this challenge is one way to change your life. How? A million different ways.....
One student told me that she is going to keep a journal of how her postures, her body and her mind change during her 30-Day challenge. Another student is doing the challenge to get over a bad break-up. No matter why you are doing it, remember, it is the commitment to doing it that is important. What you discover over the course of thirty days may be one of the most profound experiences you have in your lifetime. Good luck EVERYONE!
What a sense of joy we experienced at The SweatBox 10000 party! It was great to see all of you beautiful people in STREET clothes, some of you gorgeously face-painted, courtesy of Jamie. We've said it before and we'll say it over and over again. Yoga has the potential to heal the world and The SweatBox community is, as my 5 year old says, a "ginormous" part of that effort. You heal yourselves, you heal each other, and you heal the world.
We strive to give you opportunities to grow your individual practice as much as we can. In November, you will have the opportunity to participate in an all-day workshop with senior Bikram teacher Lynn Whitlow and in February you'll have the chance to embark on a 7-day Bikram Yoga adventure in Costa Rica with our dearly missed teacher Nina Granatir.
Brrrrrr. It is cold outside, it is dark (and getting darker), but you have your yoga. When in doubt about your ability to stay up-beat, positive and energetic during these fall and winter months, remember you have your yoga. Come in, step onto your mat, do your practice, and leave a brand new person.

New At The SweatBox
Student Bridget and Nuun Rep Renee at Nuun sampling at Capitol Hill Studio.
NUUN HYDRATION Practicing Bikram Yoga is a great way to detoxify. Oftentimes, sweating a LOT leads to dehydration. To curb this effect, many of you take electrolyte supplements. The SweatBox has started selling a great new local product that seems to have cracked the code on replenishing electrolytes. Nuun Hydration is a great way to replenish your bodies electrolytes. Look for it as single tabs and in convenient tubes at both studios. |

Bikram Yoga and Loss By Saiko Flack
I lost one of my family members recently. She had cancer for over a year. The treatment was painful and aggressive. None of the Western medicines worked for her.
I have known her for nearly 10 years and my regret is that I didn't teach her yoga. I spoke to her about the benefits of yoga many times.I asked her to join my classes from time to time. I emailed her articles about yoga, scientific research related with yoga and cancer, etc..
And finally two days before she passed away, I emailed her husband to bring her to my yoga class so that she can just lay in Savasana "Corpse Pose", and do absolutely nothing. It took me a while to think that she could just come and feel the energy of the room and fellow practitioners instead of me trying to teach her postures. It would be a great healing for her, to be in a group and receive that healing energy. You can only experience this sort of elevation when you are around other people. Some research says that 90% or more of our physical disease is psychosomatic, the other 10% is environmental. Whether this figure is accurate or not, we all know that mental stress plays a huge part of our physical health. As I think of this life and death thing we will all come across eventually, I cannot help but feel the urgency to prevent any preventable illness that is psychosomatically rooted.
Holding onto the stress or emotions to any part of our body is one of the causes of illness. We hold tension physically, it gets accumulated in certain parts of body, and creates blockages, which prevent the free flow of circulation. Over time, These blockages might manifest in the form of tumors, cancer, joint misalignment, lack of synovial fluid in the ligaments, etc. We do not even realize we are harming our bodies this way, until the stress becomes visible in the form of those illness.
Yoga is a wonderful tool to release toxins and get rid of blockages we create in our daily lives, so we have free flow from top to bottom, inside out, bones to skin... Yoga is one of the ways to stay in touch with our body/heart/spirit, so when something is wrong, we are aware and can detect, and possibly minimize or cure the area before it is too late. Yoga is not about the beauty of the muscle tones or flexibility of the body. It is ultimately a way to keep us calm, centered, blessed, and content, even facing with difficult times of life.
The best and only way to draw people around you (especially those who are reluctant to try) to yoga is becoming a great living example. People will look at you living your life happily, focused, compassionately, calmly, patiently, while your physical body is totally supple and balanced. They will think "Hmm.. yoga must have done something great for her/him." Personally, I feel my journey with yoga has a long way to go. And it is still only a process.
Yoga is meditation, either moving or sitting, because it has a long lasting effect. As I still feel so blessed and fortunate after yoga class last night, I am trying to maintain this feeling as long as I can, until next time I put out my yoga mat and sit on it to continue the process.
Saiko is Teacher Manager at The SweatBox. She can be found teaching and practicing at both SweatBox studios.
