Dear SweatBox Yogis and Yoginis,
In July, The SweatBox reached a major benchmark. Your student body at the Capitol Hill studio reached 10000!!!! Your constant support-- bringing friends, family and colleagues has brought us to this point. While only ONE student (see photo of Martha below) was granted the honor of being the actual #10,000, we honor all of you in this milestone.
During these hot summer months, it has been great to see a lot of you practicing despite the heat!!! In September, we are expanding our Capitol Hill studio.
To celebrate your ongoing yoga practice, we are offering a "Last Days of Summer Sale." Buy a yearly unlimited for the unbeatably low price of $950 between of
August 3rd -August 16th and recommit to your practice through next summer.
The heat outside of the yoga room this summer is a great reminder of one reason we do Bikram Yoga. Remember, when you feel uncomfortable, that is actually where you want to be. Discomfort is the place between being static and getting to a place of growth. You have to be uncomfortable to get to the other side. Hang in there through these hot days. Keep up your practice and lean into the discomfort. It is a path to a glorious place.
Namaste,
Laura and Frankie

Welcome your new teacher- Nikki
After working as an assistant in chiropractic office couple years ago, I started being interested in human body, so I enrolled back to school to learn more about it. Then in October, I tried Bikram Yoga, and I fell in love with it right away. It was amazing to see what Bikram Yoga could do for my body. So I went to Bikram Teacher Training this summer, and here I am. It's my pleasure to teach at The SweatBox, and I'm looking forward to meeting all of you! I'm very excited!!! |
Bikram Yoga and Addiction By Marcus Nielson In the past few months there have been articles by Penni and Suzanne on how Bikram Yoga helped them realize their potential; in Penni's case running and in Suzanne's how Bikram Yoga helped her in career in Marriage and Family Therapy. These articles inspired me to write about and share with The SweatBox community something that, one is very personal to me two, something I have struggled with for several years and lastly and most importantly something that I probably would not have recovered as much as I have without Bikram Yoga. I am talking about my struggle with heroin addiction. I have been a regular practitioner at The SweatBox since early 2007 and have been one of the hard working regular cleaners of the studio during this time too. After about a year clean in 2006, I started to relapse in the winter of 2006/2007, my first winter in Seattle. Through that spring and summer in 2007 I was struggling mightily with this addiction. Even though I was doing Bikram Yoga at the time (which, looking back seems crazy to me since Bikram Yoga and heroin, as one can imagine, do not mix) I could not get off of heroin. I confided this to a few people at The SweatBox, including Frankie, one of the owners of The SweatBox, who's support during that time I cannot thank enough. In the fall of 2007 I was lucky to find the therapy I needed to get control of my addiction and the benefits of Bikram Yoga really fell into place for me. My first step was to physically and mentally detoxify and I can't think of anything that would have helped more to do this than Bikram Yoga. During the first few weeks of being off of heroin I could feel (and worse smell - yuck!) the toxins I built up in my system sweat out of me. The next step in my recovery was to get my sense of self and self confidence back. Thankfully the timing my getting off of heroin was at the same time one of the twice yearly SweatBox's 30-day challenges, which is to those who do not know is simple - go to class everyday for 30 days in a row. And to those who do know, it is not an easy task at all. The 30 day challenge, along with my regular practice, gave me a sense of purpose and a sense of self during a time when I was really lacking in both. Amazing, even to me, I was able to complete the 30 day challenge which boosted my self-esteem during a time it really needed a boost. After detoxification and repairing my self confidence, another benefit of Bikram Yoga came to me really unexpectedly: a sense of community from The SweatBox. I became friends with people from The SweatBox before this, but with the weight of addiction off of me I became myself again and really gained more friends at The SweatBox than I had previously. And this sense of community has been huge with keeping off of heroin. As many of you know the benefits of Bikram Yoga are almost too numerous to mention. For me the benefits are continuous throughout my time practicing. Yet at a time when I was really down, the benefits of Bikram Yoga were profound. I don't know if I could have gotten control of my addiction without the detoxifying aspects, the self esteem and the sense of community I gained from practicing Bikram Yoga. Namaste Marcus
