We'll Miss you NinaNina

It is with great sadness for us and excitement for her, that we bid farewell to our dear Nina, SweatBox teacher extraordinaire and teacher manager. Nina is taking her talents to San Francisco, where she will teach Bikram Yoga to lucky students by the Bay. Beyond her excellent teaching, we have benefited immensely from Nina's generous spirit,  her humor and and her genuine desire to make the world a better place. Thank you NINA!!! We will miss you.

My Dearest SweatBox Yoga Family,

As you may have heard by now I am "moving" to San Francisco in June.  I have to put it in quotes, in part because of one of the most important teachings I have received from Yoga Philosophy, which is the idea of impermanence, or in Sanskrit: anitya.  In all honesty it's impossible for me to wrap my brain around the concept of not living in Seattle in a permanent way...
I have traveled and taught Yoga all over the world and never met such an inspired Yoga community.  I offer my heartfelt gratitude to the SweatBox Yoga Community; all the incredible teachers, Frankie, Laura and Beth for offering invaluable mentorship, and to you the students who truly make this work nothing like a job at all and instead a pure joy, privilege and honor.  It is teaching you where I have found myself as humble learner and student.  Thank You could never begin to express my sentiments of gratitude.

In love and friendship,
~Nina Rose

Welcome Saiko

We are so excited to welcome back Saiko Flack, a veteran teacher and former SweatBox teacher to take Nina's role as teacher manager. You'll find Saiko at both studios teaching and practicing. Born and raised in Japan, Saiko was exposed to classical ballet and Zazen (sitting still) in her early ages. In 1993 Saiko moved to the United States and for eight years worked in corporate America in New York City as a corporate sales manager. To balance the intense energy of her work she began a Yoga and meditation practice. After 9/11 2001 Saiko and her husband moved to Seattle, and during her continuous studies of yoga she had the fortune of  meeting Laura and Frankie, the owners of The Sweatbox , and later Bikram Choudhury, who helped root her skills in the fundamentals of both physical and spiritual practice. She completed Bikram Teacher Training in January 2004.

Saiko is also an active member of Yoga Behind Bars, a non-profit organization offering yoga and meditation to prisoners and populations "at-risk" to specifically facilitate therapeutic, conscious human development.
In April 2009, Saiko returned to Seattle after a six-month journey to India to deepen her yoga (and life) practice. She has also taught yoga and meditation at a Tibetan refugee camp in South India as well as her hometown Sapporo, Japan during the year 2008, and now is serving practitioners in Pacific Northwest again.

Teen Girls Class
Isabel Sitcov, Age 18, Teen Girls Class Student

Trying yoga at the SweatBox was my first time ever trying Bikram Yoga, let alone any type of yoga and although it is difficult, the challenge is one of my favorite parts about the class. Each position and 2nd set of the positions is a new chance to push yourself both physically and mentally and it taught me to be persistent both in yoga and in life. At The SweatBox, I really enjoyed every teacher. Being corrected on each position and being praised for your strength and effort is always encouraging, and something that I appreciated from The SweatBox teachers.

At the teen class, I was able to bond with my friends, and teen girls that I didn't know before in a new way. The teen class at The SweatBox provided a small and safe environment where practicing was challenging but always fun. Being with teen girls my age allowed me to feel completely comfortable and allowed me to practice with very little inhibitions (even though I do feel comfortable at the normal classes too).

Due to popular demand, The SweatBox is now selling coconut water. Coconut water is the perfect drink for before, during or after yoga practice. ZICO, the brand we sell, contains the five essential electrolytes your body needs to keep nerves firing, muscles moving and to help manage stress. One ZICO has more potassium than a banana - 15 times more than most sports drinks - to prevent cramping and promote recovery. Drink ZICO before or during a workout for the natural energy you need for optimal performance. After a workout, ZICO replenishes and re-hydrates you to speed recovery.

Bikram Yoga For Runners
By Penni Larson

From the day my feet touched the ground,  I was a runner. I ran my first 5k with my dad when I was 8 years old.  Ten years later, with many 1/2 marathons and 10ks under my belt, we ran our first marathon together. Now at the age of  37, I am training for my 9th marathon.

"How?" people ask, "How do you stay in shape to run? How do stay injury free? What about your knees? Don't they bother you? Ankles, hips hamstrings? My answer is always the same, "Bikram Yoga."

I was introduced to Bikram yoga about 9 years ago through a friend. I was over-training, had horrible lower back pain and was in stage two  of a degenerative spine. I was going to a chiropractor regularly and was told to stop running. Those who know me, realize this is not an option. Running is what I do!! Knowing I would do whatever it took to keep running, I tried Bikram yoga. After my first class and discovering not only could I not bend down to touch my toes, I could not hold my arms over my head for the first posture, and I thought I was an athlete! By the time the class ended, I knew I needed this yoga more then anything.

Runners need Bikram Yoga in order to keep their joints and hamstrings injury and pain free. Postures such as fixed-firm pose and tree pose are natural rehabiltiation postures for the knees. I can guarentee I would not be running without them. Padahastasana-hands to feet pose and separate leg stretching will open up the tightest of hamstrings. Even the first breathing exercise to start the class-Pranayama deep breathing, has helped me to breathe deeper, fuller and use my lung capacity more efficiently so i don't get tired as quickly.

Common questions I receive from students are:

-Should you practice and run on the same day?
Absolutely! I prefer to run first and then practice to stretch out everthing I tightened up during the run.

-If you are training for a race, how often should you practice?
I have trained people to run marathons, 1/2 marathons and my training program has always included they practice at least 2-3 times per week (everyone I trained successfully and injury free completed their race ).
To this day, I have no lower back pain and no sign of knee injury. I know this is due to the Bikram series. Bikram Yoga, in my opinion, is the best and most effective way to keep all athletes performing at their optimal level.
Keep Running!!!

Penni can be found at both studios teaching and practicing.

A Word from Laura and FrankieCoconuts in Costa Rica
In May, we went to Plam Desert to Bikram's Spring teacher Training Session. We go back as often as possible to help teach the new teachers how to teach. The experience is always amazing. Not only do we have a chance to give back to the Bikram community, but we also get the opportunity to practice lots of yoga, take classes with Bikram and meet teachers and studio owners from all around the world. It is always a learning experience and it reminds us how great our own students are. We take pride that our students are so disciplined and motivated to do the best they can during class. Thanks to you all for your ongoing hard work.

Namaste,
Laura and Frankie
