Some Thoughts about the 30-Day Challenge.....

Although I work at The SweatBox, I am very new to yoga. When I first heard about Bikram Yoga I thought nothing sounded less enjoyable. It took 8 years to get me into a studio.  My body is not bendy, you don't look at me and think yoga. That being said, I really enjoy Bikram yoga and it doesn't matter were you are in the postures, the practice is about you, your body and your mind working together.  I knew that but doing the challenge has made me believe and understand it.  I know don't just practice the yoga, I have "a practice".

About day 10 of the challenge,  I relaxed. I was doing it. The practice was happening, work was getting done, people were getting fed, wash, we have lots of clothes.  This is when the magic started happening.  In class I just let go and really started listening to the words being said.  I stopped counting the lights that needed replacing in the studio or making my shopping list in my head.  I just listened  and did it (to the best of my ability).  I started to feel my body bend and stretch and it felt good.  Sweaty hot and exhausting but SO good. The practice started giving me energy and stillness throughout the day.  I was calm. Not my usual east coast state of mind, I was enjoying the calm.

Success is a journey. The 30-Day challenge was one of many steps on that journey. I commented to several people that I lacked the ability to recall doing any activity (other than brushing my teeth) that many consecutive days. 30 days later... the goal attained. This experience gave me great pride and joy in energy. As Christian would say, "You have so much more strength than you know." I'd like to thank all the teachers and fellow students. WE DID THIS TOGETHER!  Whether a person participated in the challenge or not, I received encouragement, support, and genuine praise from all of you. A special thanks to St. Anthony for going on this journey with me and 'keeping me honest.' I couldn't have done it without you homie. Lastly, I encourage anyone to do the challenge at least once. It's a great way to prove yourself that anything is possible. Aside from the benefits of yoga over any length of time, gaining that knowledge is the success of the journey. Namaste.

The month of March was particularly inspiring for all of us at The SweatBox. We beamed like parents every day when you challengers hauled your tired souls in day after day, and we are so proud of you. As is the case every day of every month, we are grateful for our communities in Shoreline and on Capitol Hill. As a result of our Guatemala Mother-Daughter Fundraiser, some great connections were made that will further aid school age children in Guatemala. This month, we  launched our first Teen Girls Class which was nothing shy of fiercely inspiring.

As the sun starts to shine (albeit sproradically), please keep up your practice. We are all familiar with the struggle of staying true to our commitment to our yoga when the sun is shining. Remember, it is only 90 minutes and we have LONG days. You will ALWAYS feel better for having practiced your practice.

Namaste,
