Thinking Renovations? After the announcement of the new Renovation Tax Credit many homeowners are now considering renovations they had previously thought to put on hold. Are you one of them?
Some things to consider when thinking about the Tax Credit are as follows:
- You need to spend at least $1000 before you are eligible for any credit,
- You can only get the 15% credit on the monies spent after $1000 and up to $10,000.
- Not everyone will get $1,350 in tax credits
Yes, the tax credit is a good incentive to begin thinking about those updates, however, make sure that what you are choosing to do is going to give you a good ROI (return on investment), especially if you are considering moving in the next year or so.
From this....to this
Remodeling your kitchen or bathroom are the best investments you can make, with returns of over 100 percent. For example, according to a National Association of the Remodeling Industry, the addition of a bathroom at a cost of $10,000 would recoup you about 96% of the initial cost when selling your home. A minor kitchen renovation at a cost of about $8,500 would recoup you about 79% of the initial cost when selling your home. For more information on the breakdown and ROI for renovations, click here.

Assistive Technology Do you, or someone you love, require assistance to be independent in your own home? Being short, I know how much of a challenge it can be to reach items in the topmost cupboards of the kitchen. Having to find a stool, or my tall son!, can be frustrating at times.
I'd like to introduce you to Nancy Paris, a Professional Biomedical Engineer and CEO and Ryan Kanigan, President of Peak Advanced Interiors, a Vancouver based company which specializes in "innovative assistive technology paired with attractive home and office decor."
I met with Nancy recently to discuss their line of height adjustable coffee and dining tables. Very slick and stylish in a modern way. The tables are multifunctional for the kitchen, family room and office. They are electronically adjustable for seated and standing activities ~ a bonus in my line of work as often I need to stand and look down on a project from a bird's eye view. Peak's tables fit the bill well.
Another advantage to Peak's line of products would work for my mother-in-law. When she visits us she finds my dishware quite heavy and has a difficult time putting it in the cupboards as it goes in the upper cabinets. I am certain she would find the cabinet line provided by Peak very useful.
"Peak provides kitchen cabinets that are mounted at the back of new or existing wall cabinets. The lift lowers the cabinet in a curved movement down to the work surface below. The cabinet is lowered to the desired height simply by pushing a recessed control button or remote control."
Fabulous! The cabinets can come to me, or her, instead of us finding a way to get to the cabinets! I can see how this innovative technology will allow people to remain independent and in their own homes for longer periods of time as they age. And best of all, the products are attractive and can be fitted into both existing cabinets or newly built.
