Willow Bend named a Mix It Up Model School
Will Bend Mix It Up Model SchoolThe Southern Poverty Law Center's (SPLC) Teaching Tolerance program has named Willow Bend School a Mix It Up Model School for its exemplary efforts to foster respect and understanding among students this year.

Willow Bend is one of 77 schools from across the country to be named a Mix It Up Model School this year. The school received the honor for holding a Mix It Up at Lunch Day. For this event, students entered the lunch room, were randomly assigned a lunch table with students from different classes, and given a list of questions to discuss while they ate.

"We had teachers, program assistants, school administrators, and even our superintendent volunteer to give up their lunch hours to facilitate conversations at student lunch tables," said Paul Dombrowski, the school's art teacher who spearheaded the effort. "The success was tremendous! It brought everyone closer together!"

Sandburg special needs eighth grader receives
Infinitec North's Technology Achievement Award
Fernando Rodriguez's Infinitec North Technology Achievement Award
Fernando Rodriguez, an eighth grader at Carl Sandburg Junior High, celebrated his Infinitec North Technology Achievement Award with school and District staff who nominated him for the honor.
Fernando Rodriguez, an eighth grader at Carl Sandburg Junior High, was one of 12 students named a winner of the 2012 Technology Achievement Award presented by Infinitec North, the assistive technology program of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Chicago. Fernando was presented with the honor at an April 26 awards banquet held at The Cotillion in Palatine.

Fernando was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the fourth grade, and must display fierce determination and tenacity to overcome the extreme bouts of fatigue and muscle tremors caused by the disease. It is that work ethic that has allowed him to learn two different speech recognition programs that have helped him overcome a series of medical struggles he experienced as a seventh grader and make Carl Sandburg's honor roll as an eighth grader.

Paddock presents 'Living History' project at Capitol
Stuart R. Paddock School in Palatine is one of 70 Illinois schools that sent students to participate in the annual TECH 2012 "Students for the Information Age" event on Wednesday, May 2, at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield.

Throughout the event, students demonstrated for lawmakers and the public the creative ways technology is being used to enhance and accelerate student achievement in Illinois schools today. For instance, Paddock's team--which was comprised of fourth graders Emily Brinckerhoff, Morgan Fischer, and Charlie Hopper, and was sponsored by Jill Schwartzers, Paddock's learning resource center teacher--presented a project titled Living History: An Intergenerational Journey.

For this project, the students met monthly with a resident of the nearby Tamarack senior living community to learn about their senior buddy's childhood. Through these monthly get-togethers, the students learned about many historical events, and used that information to create a multi-media digital biography about their senior buddy.
