Greetings!

Well we had Kevin Rudd visit earlier this year and last weekend we had Xavier Rudd filling the YAC amphitheatre with good vibes and powerful sounds. It was a beautiful day and our venue looked fabulous - we want to thank Xavier and his team for choosing our drug and alcohol free venue as part of his Spirit Bird Australian Tour.  I also want to acknowledge our own Mel Honey and awesome young people that make up the Rock the YAC Events crew - Freddie, Phoebe, Aura, Trigan for their hard work in managing the site.  The YAC amphitheatre really is special.

Well its full swing here as we start to promote our new initiative "Cringe the Binge".  Please 'like' us on facebook if you haven't already and check out the people who are showing their support for this important issue.  We will be doing an official media launch on Friday 19th October and our National Weekend of Action is taking place on 9, 10 & 11 November.  The Cringe the Binge website should also be up and running by the end of this month!

Our recent volunteers' Soiree at Fishheads was an extremely enjoyable affair with beautiful food, the best view in the world and awesome local people who help BYS do what they do.  Thanks to Ralph and Mark and his crew for hosting and supporting us!  You guys rock!

In the next few months we will be advertising the 5th year of the SNAP Youth Photography Competition and Exhibition - and we will be offering young people opportunities & support to learn about enterprise through a series of Trail Blazers workshops.

Enjoy the beautiful spring weather everyone!

From all of us @ BYS

WHAT'S HAPPENING @  MULLUM COTTAGE

The new Year 8/9 Mullumbimby Cottage boys' group has been achieving some great outcomes. The boys' attendance has been great, they are much more focused and operate better as a team, they are building some positive peer support options with each other, there has been no incidents of aggression this term and the school confirms that they too are happy with their progress.
On Tuesday Sept 4th we went to the  Green Challenge at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which is aimed at promoting teamwork but also to have some fun.
Jemma and I had the experience of doing self esteem building groups with them and the Year 10 group using Photo-language cards. Once they moved past their uncomfortability in talking about their feelings and aided by the bravery of a couple of the boys, they talked about how the death of parents, being bullied, struggles at school and at home had impacted on them and some of the  strategies they'd used to survive hard times.
The physical work they do with Joe Robinson helps them to express some of their more challenging feelings, to be more focused and calm so they are able to concentrate in the classroom more effectively.

Y MAP
Young Mens' Adventure Program
Y Map Mountain Biking

Y MAP is a fun, vocational and activity based program for boys
in Year 10 at Byron High.

The program is being held off campus and  includes a range of adventure activities including, mountain biking, kayaking, bush walking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, scuba, boot camp, rock climbing & circus arts.

Positive male role models are included in all activities & all the outings for this program have been generously donated by local adventure/leisure businesses.

Mountain Bike Tours Byron Bay recently made a group of Byronian young men very happy by donating a fun-filled mountain biking tour worth over $1000 to the Byron Youth Service (BYS) Young Men's Adventure Program (Y MAP).

Y MAP is a joint enterprise between BYS & Byron High which offers opportunities for students to experience some of the unique Adventure Tourism activities Byron Bay has to offer.

Highlights of the Mountain Bike tour to Broken Head included riding along the beach on low tide, sightings of dolphins, & a 'wheelie' race.

We would especially like to thank the trust for so generously gifting  this experience to the program participants
