Greetings!Hi everyone! We would like to extend a sincere thanks to our wonderful community for their fabulous support during July "Young People Matter" month. We raised sufficient funds to help us keep our mobile outreach programs going while we develop some new funding approaches. All of us at BYS truly appreciate the generosity of local businesses and community members in supporting our activities, and in turn, young people in our area....so a BIG thanks to all. During July we developed a new website for BYS - one that connects to social media more easily - when you have time check it out and let us know what you think. We've also been tidying up our social media activities and have started a new BYS facebook page - to replace the Byron YAC page - so please come and 'like' us and keep in touch with what's happening for young people. Our annual Fashion course started this week and the YAC is buzzing again with young people learning and laughing. YACROCKCAFE on Friday nights is now booking lots of young bands that are taking the opportunity to hone their performances on stage - even coming from all over the region to play the YAC gigs. Fashion, Photography, Creative arts - they'll all be a feature of some enterprise programs that will be starting soon - so stay tuned for more information. And if you're in Byron, pop in and say hello and check out the facelift the YAC front reception area recently got thanks to some of our awesome volunteers and supporters. We're hoping to do some updating at the Cottage in Mullum soon too, so let us know if you're keen to help out! Have a great August.... WHAT'S HAPPENING @ MULLUM COTTAGEFirstly a massive thank you to Andrew Hall for another extremely generous donation that will help us to keep our Outreach Services operational, particularly in the north of the shire. We really appreciate it.
Secondly, there are now two young men's groups operating out of the Cottage in Mullumbimby. Both groups have had great attendance and really enjoy the out of school attention they receive. The boys participate in a fitness group, which addresses anger management issues, aggression, frustration and an inability to deal with feelings in an appropriate way. The work of the group is non confrontational, fun and supportive. It helps build a peer support structure for the boys and gradually builds trust between boys and workers, so they have somewhere they're comfortable to go for assistance.
Some of them find school very challenging, so the physical aspect of the group helps release emotions and the relaxation and meditation techniques help them to find some focus and calm. The boys have lunch with the facilitators and the tradition of pizza continues.

Y MAP
Young Mens' Adventure Program Y MAP is a fun, vocational and activity based program for boys
in Year 10 at Byron High.
The program is being held off campus and includes a range of adventure activities including , mountain biking, kayaking, bush walking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, scuba, boot camp, rock climbing & circus arts.
Positive male role models are included in all activities & all the outings for this program have been generously donated by local adventure/leisure businesses.
The first outing for Young Mens Adventure Program (Y MAP), was held on the 18th July with Nigel Stewart from NSW National Parks/Cape Byron Trust, taking the boys on an interesting guided foot tour from Wategoes to The Cape Byron Light House.
Nigel Stewart was fabulous. He was able to share important information about Indigenous lore, bush tucker & environmental land management with the boys in a fun, interactive & interesting way that encouraged participation. Moreover, Nigel was able to give the boys some interesting insight into employ ability skills for the Tourism/park management career field.
All the boys & their mentors really enjoyed this unique experience.
We would especially like to thank the trust for so generously gifting this experience to the program participants!
