WEEK'S RANDOM THOUGHT:

8 crossings. 45 minutes. Suspended above the world, helped up by only 240 feet of cable, but connected to the ethereal. And in the end, he walked away from a forced psychiatric analysis, proven sane...Read More

WEEK'S RANDOM THOUGHT:PartI
...in 1974 Phillipe Petit took the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance that could have cost him his life. To realize a childhood dream, he walked--suspended two thousand feet above ground--from one Twin Tower to the other. All that could save him from falling was a thin cable, and a righteous self-belief that he would not fail. Phillipe Petit exceeded expectations, even his own, and became part of the folklore of New York City.

While he performed his feat, he was watched by astonished NYPD and passerby's gathered below on the busy streets of Manhattan. Atop the NYC skyline, there stood a shirtless man dazzling the world with the grace of a ballerina. They witnessed a rarity, someone willing to die for his dreams. This makes me wonder, how many of us would risk everything to pursue our dreams, no matter how crazy they seem?

Phillipe Petit's wire walk was not merely about the act of suspension above New York City. The actual walk, his bravery, the pursuit of his art, was about telling the naysayers where they could stuff their doubts. He exercised passionate rebellion, overcame the challenges thrown at him, lived his life for those 45 minutes on a rope because it was the only thing he had ever wanted to do.

Today the wire walker from France is not measured by the actual elegance of that walk or how many times he crossed between the Twin Towers, but  by his dogged pursuit of his dream and his willingness to die for it. On the morning of the crossing, he was overcome by fear and anxiety. Then, as he walked across the sky,a  serenity came over him. Back and forth, back and forth he wire walked  between the Twin Towers until the NYPD and choppers above gently urged him to come down. Far below, bystanders' bewilderment had turned to appreciation.

This week, I wonder how many of us need to revisit the dreams we left behind. And while we may not  all want to do something as dangerous as walking on a wire 2,000 feet above the earth, I hope that we all seek our wire walk, and that it takes us where it must.
