Week's Random Thought:

In Dostoevsky Russia, elders ran rampant. Given over as some new incarnation of spiritual leaders, guides, you might say, the elders took one's grievances, issues, problems, and someone's soul. They took everything about you into their own soul. You gave an elder your total obedience with the hope that ultimately, by renouncing your soul, and to be totally under the control of an elder, that after this arduous task, you too would realize and achieve self-mastery, this zenith, a freedom from yourself. Having shed yourself from yourself, you would get total freedom from yourself. Ahh, freedom. Brutal concept. Honest, however complex it is, but it rings true even today...Read More

Week's Random Thought Part II:

I too have a dream. I'd like to think it could inspire millions, create an entire movement, and make the world a better place. With a simple newsletter, a website, and a commitment to help bands in any way  possible we have started our own movement. Where it takes us and our community is anyone's guess. But its all about the music. Not hype. Not BS. Just music.

Then again, I realize music does all those things. It inspires, it is a movement, and it does make the world a better place. But you have to listen. This week's message seems to be about how hope and love are to triumph over fear. The minute I learned the last eight years were officially over on a chilly Washington D.C am (ok people on TV looked cold), I realized how  far we had come in this country...Read More

Week's Random Thought:PartI

...How often we look for a spiritual path of escapism, karma strengthening, utter denial and surrender in the hope of learning something so true about ourselves that it is actually so obvious? And why always count on some quack or public figure to help us get there? Turn to live music.

We are not looking to take over anyone's soul at Loudvine.com, but we are asking you to bring yourself to our neat little website so that we can help you find live music that will allow you, like the Russian Elders did, to help you escape. Live music, while, not monastic, will allow you surrender. Talk about a cheap escape and it won't even cost  you your soul! Tell us what you like, like the Elders teach us, and we will help along your own musical journey.

Craving folk, a tribute band, R&B, desiring hip hop, need a mellow night listening to acoustic melodies, or want to go bump crazy and jump off people at some club listening to punk as your ear lobes explode, give us a chance and I bet we will have just the show you need....and it won't cost your soul, just a couple of minutes browsing our site.

Week's Random Thought Part II:

...I am not talking about race relations, orators, or our new president. I am speaking about the power of music, from the rag time and blues to the Mohawk inspired all-out kick the shit out of the suits punk days to the revival that is now called Los Angeles, the epicenter of music.  Long ago, the  gut-busting brass of a people segregated created for us a rich music tradition. Borrowing on all that is music, the Caribbean, African, jazz and blues traditions, created in this country an opportunity for self expression never seen. Now as we enter 2009, with the ability to connect with amazing, vibrant, new music, on a minute-by-minute basis, you can discover anything. I hope people do get offended. The post Elvis-induced fears of the rockers dropping lsd and moppy hair set a good tone in this country in the 1960's. It let bands raise a finger and say this is my music, the people want it, and regardless, I am going to play it like I want to play. That is my dream. May the rock and rollers we meet nightly continue doing it their way and not worrying about anything else but just making music.

Please join us in passing along the message on what we are doing as we help those kick ass bands that invigorate us on our late nights in Los Angeles with a new independent spirit of killer, rock and roll, drink whiskey, piss you off, doing it the our own way type of music, that leaves you wondering, whoa...where have I been lately. Come out and hear the power of what is happening in Los Angeles and please pass it along. You will make your small contribution to the uprising that lets all of us be part of the movement, part love, part hope, all music.

The Loudvine newsletter is for the Los Angeles Indie Music scene. Loudvine.com is run by its members for its members. Thanks again to all who are supporting us and pass this along to your friends.

Sincerely,
