Instructor Profile
Lanie Martin
Lanie Martin earned her Associate of Applied Science degree from NVCC and passed the state boards to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician in 2001. After earning her associate's degree, Lanie received her bachelor's in biology at George Mason University in 2004. The knowledge and experience Lanie gained from working in two different animal hospitals guided her development of ACE's Veterinary Assistant Program.
This program is a one-of-a-kind in the Northern Virginia area. It provides the basic and necessary information a vet assistant needs when entering the field, and it provides a peek into the veterinary technology program. It also provides the perfect educational foundation for persons interested in animal medicine or rescue. Because of her dedication, many of her students move on to obtain an associate degree in veterinary technology from NVCC.
The Veterinary Assistant Certificate program is a tremendous success largely due to Lanie's knowledge, expertise, and concern for each and every student.

Spotlight on Luis Sotelo
A New U.S. Citizen
Originally a lawyer from Bolivia,
 | |
Luis Sotelo and Sarah Taylor
|
Luis Sotelo came to the United States in 2006. Although well educated, Luis' English skills limited his career options. When he began his studies with ACE's Adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program in 2006, he started at the low-beginning level. He is now studying at the high-intermediate level with his daughter, Natalia.
Luis currently works as a chef at the Army Navy Country Club; he wants to continue taking English classes so he can communicate more effectively at his job. In November 2011, Luis studied diligently to pass the United States citizenship exam; he was motivated to succeed! Luis passed the test, and on December 12, 2011, he was awarded United States citizenship. The staff of the Adult ESOL program is extremely proud of Luis' most recent accomplishment.
Congratulations, Luis Sotelo!
Note: testing for the summer session begins the week of June 19. Get details.

Leave It to the Professionals
... and how to make certain they really are professionals
Q. What do tattoo artists, real estate agents, auctioneers, architects, boxers, wrestlers, and polygraph examiners all have i n common? A. They are all licensed trades professionals.
Whether you are going in for a new piercing or adding an addition to your home, you may want to visit Virginia's Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (VDPOR) License Lookup and Disciplinary Actions before pulling out your wallet. VDPOR provides information regarding the licensee, complaint histories, and disciplinary actions involving licensees.
Virginia's state licensing covers many professions and allows you to verify a professional's licensure. It also provides a point of discussion should there be any complaints or disciplinary actions listed.
Caveat emptor!
