Do you have email smarts?

Could you be inadvertently hurting your professional
ties at work with sloppy emailing? The Purdue OWL offers some basic pointers for composing work-related email, particularly when the recipient is a superior or someone unfamiliar:

1. Include a meaningful subject line; this helps clarify what your message is about and may also help the recipient prioritize reading your message.

2. Just like a written letter, be sure to open your message with a greeting like Dear Dr. Jones, or Ms. Smith:

3. Use standard spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. THERE'S NOTHING WORSE THAN AN EMAIL SCREAMING A MESSAGE IN ALL CAPS.

4. Write clear, short paragraphs and be direct and to the point. Don't write unnecessarily long emails.

5. Don't try to joke around - jokes and witty remarks may not come off appropriately in email.

Words of wisdom from Chef Cal Kraft

 Chef Cal Kraft

Use the salad bar at the grocer's for that little bit of garnish to make your plates look great. Why buy a whole pepper when just one ring will do?

Be creative - if the recipe says to use chicken, know that you can probably use turkey, ham, beef, pork, or even a couple types of fish instead.

Read the entire recipe and have all the ingredients on hand BEFORE you start to cook.

If it looks bad, smells bad, then be assured, it will taste bad. When in doubt, throw it out!

Chef Cal teaches a host of popular cooking classes and operates a personal chef service locally.

Getting Your Act Together

Make organizing an automatic act

by Susan Kousek,ACE instructor

Did you know the average individual wastes over $3,000 a year on disorganization?

Getting organized saves you money and helps you save at least a half hour a day, regain up to 40% of your space, find
Susan Kousek
important items in 30 seconds, locate supplies readily, avoid duplicate purchases, reduce stress, and improve concentration.

Start small. Decide on one area of your life that would benefit from more organization. Turn it into a habit by practicing the organizing behavior every day.

Some beneficial organizing habits you might want to develop if you haven't already:
  1. Create a "home" for your keys - a container near your entrance (but not visible/reachable through a window). Put your keys here as soon as you walk in the door.
  2. Have a "bills to pay" container near where you open the mail, and put all bills here as you open the mail.
  3. Open the mail every day and make a decision about each:
    • Put bills in their container.
    • If something takes only a minute or two to complete, do it now.
    • Recycle and shred as appropriate all junk mail.
    • File papers you need to keep.
    • Put things that require action in a follow-up system (lists or tickler file).

Susan teaches decluttering classes and offers many excellent tips on her Web site, balancedspaces.com.

Class Overcomes Three Feet of Snow
French language lovers meet in chat room

Jim Hodson
Jim Hodson reports that his French classes had their first taste of meeting in a chat room during the recent snows. As you will recall, the historic February snowfall had forced the cancellation of many ACE classes. This didn't deter Jim, a dedicated instructor with a large following of French language enthusiasts. He invited everyone to meet online to practice their linguistic skills.

In Jim's own words:

It was a huge success by all accounts . . . They talked about the weather, exchanging ideas, sharing advice and just complaining. Then about shopping problems due to the storm which segued into our current novel. We chatted about how rude people can be to cashiers (and vice-versa), then got into a discussion about how age is no real factor in bad behavior. It went on and on . . . I was surprised that not a word of English was used.

Student comments:

I learned five new expressions today!
My son thinks this [online chat] is so cool. He's very proud of me.
This is my first time [in a chat room] but I'm just going to throw myself into it.

Jim teaches many French classes: French 200, 600, 683-Societe, 685-Histoire, and 686-Biographie.

Calling All Writers

Across genres: Four workshops

The Vienna Community Center is hosting its 10th symposium for writers, an event so popular that last year's event offered standing room only for late registrants. Aspiring writers can learn how to write a better personal story with techniques used by novelists, journalists, oral storytellers, and others. Call 703-255-7801 for more information and to register.
Dianne Hennessy King
The symposium is coordinated by Dianne Hennessy King, whose passion for good food and good writing has been a stroke of luck for adults interested in culinary pursuits. In her spare time (when she's not editing, studying folkways, or conducting televised interviews), Dianne has developed a large following for her classes, ranging from breadbaking, seafood, and meatless Mediterranean to cookbook writing and culinary gift-making.

10th Annual Writing Your Personal History Symposium
