Electrical Apprentices Receive Scholarships
Outstanding students recognized

Gift-giving came early this year for first-year electrical apprentices Marbi Alvarez and Jerry Cuesta. They are the proud recipients of The Dennis Fitzgerald Scholarship Fund for 2009.

These applicants were selected based on the quality of their academic records, career objectives, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities. Each will receive a generous $2,500 scholarship to use toward their electrical apprenticeship coursework.

We wish them all the best in their future studies.

Apprenticeship Receives ATEF Accreditation
National recognition adds value

On November 16, the Apprenticeship Related Instruction program was granted status as an Accredited Training and Education Facility (ATEF) by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). NCCER provides the only nationally recognized curriculum and skills verification system available to the construction industry. Students with NCCER credentials become part of the national registry, which enables employers to verify their skill sets and experience. Apprenticeship receives ATEF status

NCCER accreditation recognizes training organizations that meet standards of competency warranting public and professional confidence. Qualified instructors are evaluated through a review of education, experience licensure, and certification.

The Apprenticeship staff is proud of this recent accomplishment and the added credibility it brings to apprenticeship students, the curriculum, and the program.

Carpentry Outlook

Growth rate of 10 percent anticipated

Carpenters are involved in many different kinds of construction - from the building of highways and bridges to the installation of kitchen cabinets. Carpenters construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures made from wood and other materials. About 32 percent of all carpenters (the largest construction trade) are self-employed. Between three and four years of both on-the-job training and classroom instruction are usually needed to become a skilled carpenter. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 10 percent growth rate in this trade.

ACE carpentry classes are offered throughout the year and are held at the Bryant Adult Center in Alexandria. Register now for January classes.
