By the numbers

Amazing facts to spice a dull conversation.

Adult humans have roughly 20-30 trillion red blood cells at any given time. So why do we blanch at the sight of blood?

There are about 60,000 miles of blood vessels in the human body. How does the heart push so much blood, so far, for so long without stopping?

Humans have 46 chromosomes, peas have 14 and crayfish have 200. What's with the crayfish?

Q. Why do turkeys go, "gobble, gobble"?
A: Because they never learned good table manners!

The turkey's out of the oven, the fine linen's been fine china table settingspread over the table, the "good" china and flatware are shining in all their glory, and guests are lining up at their places. The host has run through a long mental checklist a dozen times: bread basket lined and ready for rolls; matches for the candles; gravy made; carving knife sharpened, etc.

For all the effort, there could be one thing missing at the table - manners. Whether you need an etiquette refresher or not, you'll enjoy Emily Post's timeless advice on how to comport yourself, filmed long ago for another generation.

Done with Deer Despair

A recipe guaranteed to repel

Charlotte Schmidt of St. Germain, Wisconsin, authored this recipe for repelling deer which ACE French instructor Jim Hudson has tested and enthusiastically endorses.

Apply this mixture to plants (except those you plan to eat!) using a spray bottle. Reapply every two weeks or after heavy rains.

1 egg
1/2 milk
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1 tablespoon dish detergent
1 gallon water

Beat egg and milk together, then add oil and detergent. Add this mixture to water and stir or shake well. Store in a covered 1-gallon container.

Protecting Your Assets
Ways to weather winter well

snow-decked homeWith cold weather ahead, it's time to take a few precautions. For one thing, your outdoor pipes are vulnerable to freezing temperatures - a few steps to winterize now will avoid problems later.

For another thing, there's your car. If you want a car that starts nicely even in frigid temperatures, maneuvers well on frosty roads, and stays dependable, hit the car care to-do list soon.

Finally, prepare yourself for chilly days by getting out your hat and gloves, layering your attire, adding humidity to the rooms you live in, moisturizing lips and skin, and keeping the indoor temperature above 65 degrees.
