hand washing

"In one Detroit study, schoolchildren who washed their hands four times a day had 21 percent fewer sick days due to respiratory illness than did students in general, and 57 percent fewer days lost due to upset stomachs," writes Manoj Jain in Misery Loves Company, but... (The Washington Post, 9-8-09).

Keeping hands clean and away from the face is old advice with ageless wisdom.

If you get flu-like symptoms, stay home to contain the spread to others. Fairfax County Public Schools provides excellent, up-to-date information and advice on H1N1 Flu.

For your convenience we've linked several health and medical occupations to BLS Web pages:

In Demand: Activity Professionals
Enhancing the well-being of adults every day

By Vicky Surash, ACE instructor
Do you enjoy talking with elderly seniors? Do you have varied skills and interests and enjoy doing something different every day? Would you like to have fun doing your job? If so, becoming an activity professional is a win-win situation for you.

You can choose to become an activity assistant, director, or consultant based on your level of experience and education. There are several avenues to certification at each level. You can pick the setting and population you want - senior center, adult day care, independent living, assisted living or skilled nursing.  Depending on the position and setting you choose, your duties may include running an activity program; developing a monthly calendar of events; assessing residents and documenting their progress; or managing, mentoring and supervising staff.

With the aging population rapidly growing the opportunity for continued employment and career advancement is excellent. There is never a dull moment and every day is a learning experience in this line of work. It's truly rewarding.

You will learn all you need to know to perform your duties in the Professional Activity Director courses. Come join the fun as we learn how to put the "active" in activities. For more information, call 703.658.1216.

Note: The next class starts in January 2010; you may register on or after November 6, 2009. For more information, please call 703.658.1225.

In the dentist's chairA nice smile and sweet breath are no longer the only reasons for cleaning your teeth religiously. It turns out that oral hygiene plays an important role in cardiovascular health.

Kenneth Kornman, DDS, PhD, editor of the Journal of Periodontology, reports that "Inflammation is a major risk factor for heart disease, and periodontal disease may increase the inflammation level throughout the body . . .  you will now see cardiologists and periodontists joining forces to help our patients." Parental views can make a big difference

The US Department of Health and Human Services has issued a report confirming the importance of parents' stance on substance abuse. It states

Youths aged 12 to 17 who believed their parents would strongly disapprove of their using substances were less likely to use that substance than were youths who believed their parents would somewhat disapprove or neither approve nor disapprove.

View www.drugfree.org/ to learn how to keep your kids safe, including great tips on how to talk with them about using and abusing prescription and over-the-counter drugs, alcohol, and other substances.
