Just Around the Corner
A teaser from Microsoft

Are you curious to know what Microsoft will be rolling out Microsoft logo in Office 2010?  Rest assured, there are some major changes and surprises in store for MS Office users. Microsoft has provided a sneak-peek at the next generation of MS Office.

Today's Wishlist for Tomorrow's Gadgets
One instructor's take on technological temptations

Ryan Woods, instructor
As the father of five children, I find myself at various community events with parents who want to discuss the latest technology trends and gadgets for the year. So in preparation for the upcoming football season, I've tucked these few suggestions in my back pocket.

Hand-held Portable Universal Cell Phones Jammer
It's a cell phone jammer that will block all cell phone signals within 32ft. I'd love to have this in the grocery store; loud mobile phone-talking in public places has simply gotten out of hand! OK, so the FCC might have some thoughts on radio interference and it would probably stop anyone in range from dialing 911, but the possibilities make my eyes go all dreamy.

Gentlemen's MP3 Player
While admittedly geeky, this MP3 playing tie clip has serious double-take potential. It displays track info in a single line across your tie: sort of like subtitles for your life's soundtrack. It would be great if you could get all the college games during those pesky fall weddings!

Personal Pocket Safe
For those of us who are really insecure, here is a great new way to hide stuff. Whether you're blogging about government mind control or researching Area 51 though telepathy, this encrypting USB flash drive is just the place to store all your evidence!

Spy Camera Video Watch
There's something tragically cool about a video camera in a watch, and the watch is pretty cool, too. That's actually a very good thing because, unless you're James Bond, you'll probably get more use out of the watch than the camera. All in all, 8Gb of AVI video in a watch!  Seriously! Who doesn't want to find that in his stocking?!

Ryan teaches PC basics and how to secure your home computer from Internet threats. His whimsical wishlist should not be construed as product endorsement or testament to product quality or performance.

If you have a widget wishlist to share, please write us at onpoint@fcps.edu for possible future publication.

Posture Do's and Don'ts
Alignment makes a difference

office worker sits at workstationWhile the human body was designed for activity, the reality is that most office workers sit for prolonged periods of time in front of a computer. You can reduce the negative impact this contrived position can have on your body over time. The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) suggests taking frequent breaks from sitting and checking the alignment of your body to workstation components. To help folks minimize their risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders and injury, OSHA has compiled helpful information - complete with illustrations and a checklist - for optimal posture and workstation layout.

Terminology to Terminate
Quite patently passé!

Delete these 12 words from your office vocabulary, if you haven't already:

Intranet, Extranet, Web surfing, push technology, application service provider (ASP), personal digital assistant (PDA), Internet telephony, thin client, Weblog, long distance call, World Wide Web, and information superhighway.

The list comes from a Business Week article (Aug. 24, 2009) and underscores how quickly the cyber landscape has transformed in just a decade or so.
