Penny's Protégé Paints On
Started in ACE art classes
Two works by former Fairfax resident and ACE art student Allen Cooke made it into the 40th annual Lewisburg Arts Festival in Pennsylvania last May, an event attended by close to 10,000 people.
Cooke ended a 34-year career as a technician with Verizon to start a second career as an artist. He attributed his new direction to taking art classes with Penny McGrath. "I have no other training or education in art except ACE," he says. His venture into painting began when he enrolled in Penny's class almost 20 years ago and continues into the present in his new life in Pennsylvania. "People take for granted what we have available to us in Fairfax County. I've been fortunate in having an instructor who has the gift to be able to see what's wrong with a painting and knows how to persuade you to make changes without crushing your spirit," he notes. "By nature I troubleshoot problems. It requires some skill and lots of logic and is a precise science. Art for me is so weird because it's almost the opposite. I barely got out of high school and I am intimidated by many fellow artist who have gone to college for art and many had careers related to art." In recent years, Allen's work has attracted two first-place, two second-place, and honorable mention awards in shows co-sponsored by ACE and the Fairfax Arts Council.
Penny McGrath and her current students will exhibit over 100 works this fall in the Fairfax County Government Center's South Atrium from October through December 2009. The Government Center is open from 7a-10p daily with free parking available.
The public is invited to a reception for the artists on Saturday, November 7, 2-4:30p.

Instructor news in many hues
In the market for unique greeting cards? Amy Vanden Boogart, instructor of card-making workshops, will be a vendor at Ballston Arts & Crafts Market fair on October 10th and at Art on the Avenue in October in Del Ray, Alexandria.
Leo Deege has been visiting our great national parks this summer, capturing breathtaking scenery on canvas. He's entered two paintings in the US Geological Survey show this August and will partner with Wayne Wolfersberger (below) for a joint show in the Herndon Arts Center this fall. The latter show will feature scenes from the Tetons, the Rockies and Yellowstone. He teaches a popular oil/acrylics class, all levels.
Jean K. Gill, AWS, NWS, is enjoying much well-deserved attention locally and nationally in 2009. She was awarded Best in Show at the Green Spring Gardens Show of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists (PVW) and took an honorable mention at the PVW 35th Anniversary Show at Strathmore Hall. She also received the Canson, Inc. Award in the 17th Annual National Exhibition of the Western Colorado Watercolor Society (March-April 2009); her painting was chosen for the catalog cover. She had a painting accepted into the Baltimore Watercolor Society's Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition (April-May 2009) and will be included in the Virginia Watercolor Society's 35th Anniversary Show this September. Jean teaches advanced watercolor classes.
Look for the August issue of The Pastel Journal, which features Fairfax Station artist Lynn Goldstein. Two articles, one written by Lynn herself, accompany eight images from her tree series entitled "Reaching." Lynn teaches painting, pastels, and portraiture throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Autumn, right, gives a new meaning to finding perspective!
Jane Halliwell Green had a solo show of her rugs and textile-inspired watercolors at the Quiet Waters Gallery in Annapolis this past June 18-July 26. Her new book, Pictorial Hooked Rugs, published by Stackpole Publishing will be available in October, but can be pre-ordered through Amazon books. Jane teaches traditional rughooking. Enjoy Jane's handiwork: www.paintpencil.com and www.rugandwool.com.
Arlita Kadar, instructor of Asian brush painting, received the People's Choice Award for her one stroke painting, "Happy Day," in the Fairfax Art League's June 2009 exhibit. She used ink mixed with watercolor on watercolor paper.
Cherie M. Redlinger has received an Honorable Mention for Closure, her texture and oil painting in the Edison Place Gallery show opening Sept. 8 (701 Ninth Street, NW, Washington, DC). Cherie teaches beginning drawing, watercolor, oil/acrylic, and color pencil classes.
Wayne Wolfersberger, a wildlife photographer and Yellowstone Park ranger who teaches ACE photography classes in his spare time, will be the other featured artist at the Herndon Arts Center this coming fall (along with Leo Deege). His breathtaking photograph, right, is aptly called Rainbow at Lower Falls. Wayne teaches digital camera photography, 35mm film SLR/Digital SLR Camera , and outdoor photography courses.
