Look Out for Lyme

Along with outdoor summer fun come certain risks. A big one is the tiny blacklegged tick, which can transmit Lyme and 11 other diseases to humans.

A startling 959 people were were infected with Lyme disease in 2007. Many more unreported cases are suspected.
The consequences can be debilitating if not detected and treated early.

Essential Rx

Next time you reach for a pill to treat a headache, try drinking a few glasses of water first and see if it disappears. Headaches are a common symptom of dehydration.

There's also such a thing as drinking too much water when your body is lacking enough salt to absorb all the fluid.  Cerebral edema, or swelling of the brain, can result. So ingest a little salt before a rigorous workout in the summer heat!

Read the Mayo Clinic's rundown on dehydration and reach for water often!

Aging Parents and Their Adult Children
Getting important conversations underway

In Their Parents' Keepers (The Washington Post, 6/16/09), author Paula Span urges those with elderly parents to start talking through topics which are to Elderly woman with younger womanmany of us awkward, if not totally taboo. "We can... discuss their preferences as they age, investigate some of the options for when they need more help, get the important legal documents (such as powers of attorney and living wills) in place," Span suggests.

If the thought of having such a conversation provokes anxiety, help is here. Michael and Laura Pierce's 90-minute seminar, Aging Parents and Their Adult Children, helps you learn how to organize a family meeting, manage family dynamics, recruit the right people to assist, and protect assets before a crisis occurs.
