Live: On the Air!
ACE culinary arts teacher Kay Karim has become a celebrity this year. This past March she appeared on Channel 9's What's Cooking morning program to share her baklava recipe and an Iraqi meal. Then Fox Channel 5 invited her to prepare an Iraqi dish (watch the video!) for a televised broadcast. Kay Karim received the Gourmand World Cookbook Award in London in April 2008 for her cookbook, Iraqi Family Cookbook: From Mosul to America. The award is presented to authors whose books appear to be historically significant to cookbook publishing. She teaches the ever more popular Eastern Mediterranean Cuisine class.

A Hot New Market
Off-the-field coaching
ACE teacher Michelle Kunz informs us that there's a growing demand for coaches, particularly for the DC area. She says that professionals who face downsizing, retirement, or even job fatigue are moving into coaching, a profession which produces average annual salary of $77,000 (life coach) and $134,000 (corporate coach), respectively (Sherpa Executive Coaching Study, 2009).
A certified professional coach supports clients develop leadership and life skills to reach and sustain their goals.
Michelle heads the DC metropolitan area of iPec, a national life coach and corporate coach training company and teaches Change Your Energy - Change Your Life and Living Fearlessly this month.
For those interested in taking a look at coaching, sign up for Margarita Rozenfeld's class this fall, How to Earn a Great Living as a Life Coach.

Basking in Compliments
Accepting is unselfish
A surprisingly large number of people don't know how to take a compliment. That little extra-critical voice in our heads not only undermines ourselves, but forces others to undermine us also. To get the hang of easily accepting compliments and make life a little more delicious, read this article posted on lifehack.org.
Kudos to Joanne Glenn, ACE business and creative writing teacher, for bringing this resource for the overly modest to our attention.
Joanne and fellow teachers Kathy Nutt and Louise Gibney have already plunged into planning the second annual Writers Read event for Friday, November 13 at the Tysons Borders bookshop. Over a hundred attended last year's reading of local writers' work. Mark your calendar for this chance to enjoy the talent in our midst!

Procrastination Postponed Indefinitely
How to get going no matter what
Susan Kousek, ACE teacher of Office Decluttering (offered this fall) and Time Management courses, has advice for getting around our tendency to procrastinate on projects we dread. Her suggestions:
- Make an appointment with yourself to work on the task and actually write it on your calendar.
- Set a timer for 15 minutes and start working on the task.
- Vow not to even look at your e-mail today until you've spent half an hour on the task you've been avoiding.
- Instead of working on a bunch of small, easy-to-accomplish tasks first, decide to tackle the first small steps of a big project instead. You'll be amazed at how much of that big project you may get done. Then handle those small easy tasks.
- Plan a reward for when you finish the task!
